Pioneers score five unanswered goals in second period
DENVER, Colo. – No. 14 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (11-6-2, 7-1-1 NCHC) grabbed a 1-0 lead after a late first period goal but then gave up five second period goals in a 5-1 setback to No. 6 Denver (15-5-1, 6-3-0 NCHC) on Friday night at Magness Arena. The loss was the first regulation loss in conference play this season, ending a program record eight-game unbeaten streak to start conference play.
The Huskies controlled play for much of the first period, leading shots on goal 9-7 in the opening frame. Near the end of the period, sophomore forward Ethan AuCoin (Calgary, Alberta) scored his second goal in as many games after an impressive pass from freshman from freshman forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta). Gross took the puck off a Pioneer's stick below the goal line and passed it right to AuCoin's stick in front of the net, who went top shelf for the score.
In the second period, the top-scoring team in the nation exploded for five goals to grab control of the game. The Pioneers scored two power play goals, two even strength goals and one shorthanded goals in the period while outshooting the Huskies 18-10.
