St. Cloud State Men’s Basketball Drops Dogfight at Home

(RV) UMD used strong second half to take a 75-66 victory over the Huskies
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (7-9 overall, 3-7 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) dropped a closely contested matchup with (RV) Minnesota Duluth on Saturday afternoon, 75-66 at Halenbeck Hall.
After going down 4-0 early in the game, SCSU used an 17-4 run to take a nine-point lead – its largest of the game – after freshman Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia) and freshman Jamiir Allen (Milwaukee, Wis.) each made back-to-back three pointers. The Huskies lead slipped away, and they trailed by three at the break. Half of the Huskies made field goals in the first half came from beyond the arc and they turned the ball over eight times but played great defense, holding UMD to below 35% shooting from the field.
Early in the second half, the lead changed back-and-forth between teams but after the Huskies lost the lead with just over 16 minutes left, the Bulldogs maintained a two-possession lead the rest of the way. The Huskies went dry from three-point land in the second half – 3-16 (18.8%) as UMD shot over 60% from the field and from three, outscoring the Huskies 45-39 in the final 20 minutes to come away with a nine-point victory.

The Huskies continue their homestand next weekend with a pair of games. On Friday, they face off against Wayne State and on Saturday they play Augustana. Friday's tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's game will begin at 5:30 p.m. Both games will take place at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud. - Allen scored a team-high 15 points. He made two of his three three-point attempts.
- Freshman Anish Ramlall (Rosemount, Minn.) scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field dished out four assists.
- Senior Matt Willert (Buffalo, Minn.) scored seven points including a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line. He also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and tallied two steals.
- The Huskies are now 60-43 all-time against Minnesota Duluth after the loss.
- SCSU led the game in free-throw percentage (76.9%-61.9%), three pointers (8-6), assists (13-8), steals (4-3), blocks (3-2), points off turnovers (9-4) and bench points (33-21).
- UMD led the game in field goal percentage (46.7%-39.3%), three-point percentage (40.0%-28.6%), field goals (28-24), free throws (13-10), total rebounds (9-32—41 – 4-28—32), points in the paint (42-24), second chance points (12-1) and fast break points (7-0).
- Allen has scored 11+ points in eight games this season including the last seven games in a row. He has scored 7+ points in 12 games. Fifth game making 2+ threes this season and fourth game making 6+ field goals.
- Ramlall tied his career-high of four assists. He has scored 11+ points in eight games including four of the last five. Fourth game with four assists this season.
- Willert tied his career-high of 10 rebounds. He set season highs in three-point attempts (10) and steals (two). He has scored 7+ points in 11 games this season including the last five in a row. He has grabbed 4+ rebounds in eight games including the last four.
- Freshman Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia) scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds. He tied his career high, shooting five three-pointers. He has scored 8+ points in 12 games and has grabbed 4+ rebounds in 14 games. Sixth game with 2+ three-pointers.
- Graduate student Luke Taylor (Germantown, Wis.) scored six points and dished out a season-high three assists in his return to action following a two-game absence due to injury. He has scored 6+ points in all but one game he has played in this year.
- Senior Joe Mutimer (Melbourne, Australia) grabbed five rebounds – the second most in a game this season.
- Freshman Vance Peiffer (Waukee, Iowa) scored five points and tied his career-high recording two blocked shots. He has recorded 2 blocks in back-to-back games. He has scored 5+ points in the last seven games.
- Freshman Nate Dahl (Buffalo, Minn.) followed up his career-night scoring five points on 2-of-3 shooting. He also tallied two assists and two rebounds in 13 minutes of action.
