No. 1 St. Cloud State Wrestling Showcased at Black & Red Classic

Team Red comes away with 29-9 victory

St. Cloud, Minn.- No. 1 ranked St. Cloud State Wrestling kicked off their season Wednesday evening with the annual Black & Red Classic. Team Red earned the victory for the second straight season after winning the final four bouts.

The evening started with No. 7 ranked Conor Knopick battling against Dominic Ducato at 125 where Knopick earned an 8-2 victory to give Team Black the early 3-0 lead. The teams then traded wins as Sam Spencer of Team Red defeated No. 7 Caleb Meekins 9-0 at 133 and then No. 11 Alyeus Craig beat Jayce Luna 6-3 at 141 to give Team Black a 6-4 advantage. Team Red responded with wins in the next two matches as Colton Bornholdt captured a fall at the 6:49 mark and then Joel Jesuroga took down Dereck Johnson 8-6 in a thrilling match at 157. Team Black got back on track as No. 6 ranked Nick Novak earned a 4-3 victory over Jude Link as he cut Team Red's lead to 13-9. Team Red would gain momentum as Bryce Dagel came away with a 1-0 victory over No. 4 Cole Glazier which sparked a four-match win streak for Team Red. No. 6 Bryce FitzPatrick beat Tyson Meyer 8-7 in a tightly contested match. No. 4 Dominic Murphy gave Team Red their third bonus point victory of the evening with a 11-1 major decision against Nathan Fury. Donnie Hidden closed out the match for Team Red as he defeated No. 2 La'Ron Parks by injury default to set the final score at 29-9. In an exhibition match at 157, Nolan Throne defeated Jeroen Smith 5-0.
