St. Cloud State Women’s Basketball Picks up Convincing Home Win Over Northern State

Sawicki scores career-high 22 as Huskies pick up third straight win
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (13-7 overall, 10-6 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) used a big second quarter to pull away from Northern State and earn a 75-55 victory Saturday afternoon at Halenbeck Hall.
The Huskies held a modest 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, but an offensive explosion in the second quarter saw St. Cloud State shoot 50% from the field and a blistering 60% from beyond the arc. SCSU locked up the Wolves on the other end, holding them to a mere eight points on 27% shooting, outscoring NSU by 16 points in the quarter.
Northern State (15-7, 11-5 NSIC) found its offensive footing in the third quarter, scoring 24 points but could not stop the Huskies on the other end, giving up 20 points. St. Cloud State outscored the Wolves 18-11 in the fourth quarter to come away with their third consecutive win and 13th overall victory.

The Huskies play two games next week, one at Halenbeck Hall and the other on the road. SCSU will host UMary on Thursday, February 8 and then travel to Minot State on Sunday, February 11. - Sophomore Ashley Sawicki (Waunakee, Wis.) scored a game/career-high 22 points on a nearly perfect night. Sawicki made a career-high eight of her nine field goal attempts and made all six of her free throws. The sophomore also grabbed five rebounds and recorded one steal and block.
- Senior Makenna Vanzant (Farmington, Ark.) scored a career-high 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting and made three of her four three-point attempts in 20 minutes off the bench. Vanzant also dished out four assists and recorded two steals.
- Senior Dru Henning (Mukwonago, Wis.) scored nine points, made three of her five three-point attempts and tied her career-high with six assists.
- After the win, SCSU is 16-17 all-time against Northern State.
- St. Cloud State led the game in field goal percentage (47.3%-40%), three-point percentage (41.7%-38.1%), free throw percentage (81.3%-70%), total rebounds (33-28), assists (20-13), steals (8-6), points off turnovers (22-2), fast break points (3-1), and bench points (32-1).
- NSU led the game in blocks (5-2).
- The teams tied in points in the paint (22) and second chance points (8).
- St. Cloud State's biggest lead of the game was 20 points.
- Sawicki has scored in double-figures in 14 games this season and in 11 of her past 12 contests. She has grabbed 5+ rebounds in 14 games this season.
- Vanzant set her career-high with 17 points, scoring in double-figures for the second time this season. Vanzant tied her career-high with three three-pointers made. She has now dished out 4+ assists in three games this season and tallied 2+ steals in four.
- Henning tied her career-high with six assists and has dished out 3+ assists in eight games this season. Henning has also scored 9+ points in eight games this season.
- Sophomore Jada Eggebrecht (Phillips, Wis.) scored nine points and recorded three assists in 28 minutes of play. Eggebrecht has scored 9+ points in 17 games this season and registered three or more assists for the third game this year.
- Freshman guard Alana Zarneke (Appleton, Wis.) made two of her three three-point attempts in a six-point outing in nearly 12 minutes of play. Zarneke has now scored 6+ points in nine games this season and made 2+ three in six.
- Senior Tori Peschel (Sauk Centre, Minn) grabbed a game-high and season-high eight rebounds and nabbed a steal in nearly 26 minutes of action. Peschel has now grabbed 6+ rebounds in seven games this season.
