Team USA to compete in 2025 World Junior Championship Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Canada
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – After helping the Americans win gold at the 2024 World Junior Championship, St. Cloud State Men's Hockey head coach Brett Larson will return as an assistant coach for the 2025 U.S. National Junior Team, announced Tuesday by USA Hockey. Larson will once again join Team USA for the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, slated to take place Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Ottawa, Ontario.
This will be Larson's fifth appearance on the Team USA bench after most recently serving as the assistant coach for the gold medal-winning 2024 U.S. National Junior Team. He also manned the bench as an assistant coach for the 2020 U.S. National Junior Team and 2022 U.S. Olympic Team, and was the head coach for the U.S. Junior Select Team that won the 2012 World Junior A Challenge.
Larson just completed his fifth season on the bench for St. Cloud State, where he has compiled a 123-76-21 record with four NCAA Tournament appearances, including a national runner-up finish in 2020-21. The Huskies have captured two conference championships with Larson at the helm, winning the 2019 NCHC Penrose Cup and 2023 NCHC Frozen Faceoff, and reached the NCAA Frozen Four for the second time in program history in 2021. He was named the 2018-19 NCHC Coach of the Year after leading St. Cloud State to a 30-6-3 record and a regular season conference title.
Prior to St. Cloud State, Larson served as assistant coach at his alma mater, Minnesota Duluth, for two stints (2008-11 and 2015-18) where he helped the Bulldogs reach the NCAA Tournament five times and the Frozen Four three times, including national championships in 2011 and 2018. He also served as the head coach and general manager for the USHL's Sioux City Musketeers from 2011-13 and as an assistant coach at Ohio State from 2013-15.
A Duluth, Minn., native, Larson played four seasons at Minnesota Duluth (1991-95) where he captained the Bulldogs during his senior season and was a three-time WCHA All-Academic team award recipient. He was an 11th round pick of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings in 1990 and played 12 years or professional hockey, including two (1999-2001) as a player-coach with the San Diego Gulls of the West Coast Hockey League.
