Husky Captain named nominee for award given to college hockey’s finest citizen
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey senior defenseman Josh Luedtke (Minnetonka, Minn.) has been named 2025 Hockey Humanitarian Award nominee, announced by the foundation on Tuesday. A captain for each stop of his hockey career, the Minnetonka native is a part of a 14-player class to be nominated for the prestigious award.
The Hockey Humanitarian Award, which is celebrating its 30th season, is presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen — a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism.
Luedtke, named captain ahead of the 2024-25 season, has been a key contributor for the Huskies through the first half of the season. Luedtke has recorded two goals and four assist for six points while playing in all 20 games for SCSU. He skates on the team's first power play unit and has contributed to the Huskies' penalty kill unit which has ranked in the NCAA's top 10 all season. The Husky senior leads the team in blocks with 29, while his six points ranks first among all defensemen. Against Omaha on Dec. 2, Luedtke matched a career-high two points in a game with a power play goal and assist in a 5-2 victory.
Luedtke has been an integral part to SCSU's success over the past four season, helping the Huskies advance to two NCAA Tournament (2022, 2023) and win the NCHC Frozen Faceoff championship in 2023. In the classroom, Luedtke has earned three NCHC Academic All-Conference and AHCA All-American Scholar honors while being named an NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and CSC Academic All-District honoree twice.
A 2019 graduate of Minnetonka High School, Luedtke played three seasons of varsity hockey and helped the Skippers win their first-ever state title in 2018 while earning all-state honors. He recorded 72 points on the ice in his junior and senior seasons with Minnetonka, including a 11-goal, 25-assist performance as a senior captain. He also lettered in lacrosse with the Skippers. Following his prep career, Luedtke played two seasons in the USHL with the Des Moines Buccaneers (2019-21) where he was named captain and scored four goals and 38 assists for 42 points in 93 games.
Luedtke's impact extends much farther than his play on the ice, as he has given back his time to his communities throughout his hockey journey. The senior captain has given back to the sport he loves as a coach for youth players in his hometown, college town and internationally, teaching the sport of hockey at Impact Hockey in Minnetonka, at the Spencer Meier Hockey Camp in the St. Cloud area and in Hungary with Hockey Ministries International. Luedtke spent the 2024 summer as a personal care assistant with MRCI in Minnetonka, where he helped an individual with activities, time management and life skills. He has also served as a bible study leader for the SCSU men's hockey team and as a youth leader for Harvest Fellowship in Sauk Rapids.
