Team Red Captures a 19-18 Victory
St. Cloud, Minn. – No. 8 St. Cloud State began their 2025-26 season as they wrestled in their annual Black & Red Classic Thursday evening at Halenbeck Hall. Team Red came away with an 19-18 victory after winning five of the eleven bouts, but with three wins in bonus point fashion.
 
The dual kicked off at 125 where Ben Aranda of Team Black came away with an 8-2 victory over Austin Grzywinski. A pair of takedowns partnered with an escape and riding time propelled the Cleveland State transfer to the victory. At 133, Dominic Ducato used an early reversal in the third period to extend Team Black's lead to 6-0 after a 3-0 victory over Mason Mills. Team Red got on the board in the next bout as two-time national qualifier Conor Knopick captured a 15-0 tech fall over Ethan Bast at 133. Rowdy Neighbor followed Knopick with a bonus point win of his own as he defeated Bam Eusebio 17-7. Trailing 6-1 in the first period, Neighbor tacked on three takedowns and a four-point near-fall to solidify his comeback. Now trailing 9-6 in the match, Team Black strung together the next three matches to retake the lead. Jeroen Smith came away with two takedowns in his 9-7 victory over Mason Carpenter. Colton Bornholdt would be taken down in the first minute against Patrick Kubisa, but an escape and takedown gave him a 4-3 lead at the end of the period. Bornholdt scored a takedown with 12 seconds left in the third period to secure an 8-4 win. At 165, Derek Johnson and Gabriel Smith battled into overtime with each wrestler scoring an escape. Johnson ultimately scored a takedown in overtime to win 4-1 in sudden victory and give Team Black a 15-6 advantage. No. 3 Bryce Dagel then took to the mat for Team Red and came away with a 13-4 major decision against Brody Hart. Two takedowns drove Dominic Mann to a 7-3 victory for Team Black against Brenden Heying. The score then shaped to be 18-13 with Team Black in the lead with only two bouts remaining. A first period takedown for Tyson Meyer of Team Red was enough to earn a 4-1 victory over Nathan Fury. Fury nearly tied the match with a last second takedown which led to a challenge. After review, it was found that Fury did not score a takedown as Team Red set up a winner take all match between Samuel Winkels and Donnie Hidden at 285. In what was a tightly contested match, each wrestler came away with a takedown and escape to set the score at 4-4 at the end of the first period. Hidden scored an escape to begin period two as he took a 5-4 advantage. Winkels began period three by escaping to tie the match as both wrestlers were interlocked. With 32 seconds remaining, Hidden captured a takedown to take the lead. Winkels escaped with 13 seconds left on the clock and nearly secured a late takedown. Hidden held on as he came away with a 8-6 victory to secure the win 19-18 win for Team Red.
