St. Cloud State Women’s Soccer Beats SMSU 2-0, Sets Program Record with Five Consecutive Shutout

Weier and Trapino score, Huskies record fifth consecutive shutout and extend unbeaten streak to nine to open season
MARSHALL, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Soccer (6-0-3, 4-0-2 NSIC) shutout its opponent for the fifth consecutive game with a 2-0 win over Southwest Minnesota State (2-7-0, 1-5-0 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon win Marshall, Minn. Sophomore forward Delaney Weier (Madison, Wis.) and junior forward Linsey Trapino (Verona, Wis.) scored for the Huskies while redshirt sophomore Jaylee Strickland (Columbus, Ohio) made three saves in the shutout.
The win matches a program record for most consecutive shutouts at five and extends SCSU's program record unbeaten streak to start a season to nine.
TURNING POINT
SCSU scored twice in a span of 13 minutes on the game clock, first scoring in the 34th minute of the first half and then again just over two minutes into the second half. Weier scored the first and game-winning goal, as she snuck past the SMSU defense and was able to sneak the ball past the Mustang goalie for her first goal of the season. Then, earlier in the second half, Trapino was the one who was able to out-sprint the Mustang defense and was all alone on a breakaway, beating the goalie to the nearside for the score. Sophomore midfielder Jordan Kardelis (Muskego, Wis.) provided two beautiful feeds and recorded an assist on each score.

SCSU will return home for its next two contests, facing Bemidji State on Friday, Oct. 10 and Minnesota Duluth on Sunday, Oct. 12.

- Trapino's score was her 16th career goal, which moves her to 10th all-time in program history, pulling even with Hannah Marion (2016-19).
- Weier scored her second career goal and first career game-winning goal.
- Kardelis' two assists were the first two points of her collegiate career.
- Strickland recorded her sixth shutout of the season and her 14th career blank sheet. She moves into fifth-place in program history in career shutouts, surpassing Evie Kohn (13, 2019-22).
- Three Huskies – Strickland, junior defender Ana Spaine (West Des Moines, Iowa) and sophomore defender Izzy Halunen (Woodbury, Minn.) – played a full 90 minutes in the game.
