Huskies erase two-goal deficits twice before falling in overtime
OXFORD, Ohio – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (6-7-0, 1-4-0 NCHC) came back from two-goal deficits twice, but couldn't ever gain the lead, falling 6-5 in overtime to Miami (8-3-0, 2-3-0 NCHC) on Friday night at Goggin Ice Center in Oxford, Ohio. The Huskies trailed 5-3 with 5:31 left in the game before scoring twice in the span of 100 seconds, only to give up a goal early in the extra period.
Miami outshot the Huskies, 18-3 in the first period and found the back of the net first with a power play goal at 11:40. It was a period filled with penalties with SCSU called for three and Miami called for two in the opening 20 minutes.
The RedHawks extended their lead to 2-0 in the second period with a goal just 2:20 into the middle frame when Ethan Hay found the back of the net. The Huskies then made their first two-goal comeback, scoring at the 5:26 and 13:22 moments of the period with goals by junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) and senior forward Grant Ahcan (Savage, Minn.), respectively. Hall first got the Huskies on the scoreboard when he intercepted an errant pass near the goal line and only had the RedHawk goaltender to beat, scoring his fifth goal of the season. Ahcan scored his first goal of the season when he grabbed a shot from the blue line from sophomore defenseman Finn Loftus (Blaine, Minn.) and reached around the goalie's pad to sneak the puck to the back of the net. Despite SCSU's best efforts, Miami then responded with a goal at 16:39 to take a 3-2 lead in the game.
SCSU tied the scored for the second time in the game when sophomore forward Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.) netted a shorthanded goal at 6:16 into the final frame. The score came right after a stretch of 4-on-4 hockey and the puck being sent all the way down behind the Miami goal. Thoreson won a foot race to the puck then avoided a check against the boards, evading three defenders before carrying the puck all alone in front where he went five-hole to beat the goaltender. Miami then took its second two-goal lead with back-to-back goals just 19 seconds apart at 14:10 and 14:29 moments of the period.
With 5:04 left to play, coincidental minor penalties were called, causing a 4-on-4. The Huskies elected to use this situation to pull its goalie and create an extra attacker situation that acted like a power play. The move paid off, and the Huskies pulled within one goal again when junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) tipped in a shot from the right dot with 4:21 left in the game. SCSU tied the score just 1:40 later when Thoreson made a nifty play at the blue line past a defender and fired a wrister to tie the game with 3:02 remaining.
In the extra period, Miami converted a 2-on-1 breakaway at the 1:10 mark to take the game and extra point, 6-5.
