SCSU misses game-tying three at the buzzer
Houghton, MI. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (2-2) were defeated in a tightly contested game against Michigan Tech as they fell 69-66 Friday evening. The Huskies battled back from a 14-point deficit but fell short after a game-tying three hit the back rim at the buzzer.
The first quarter was quiet for the Huskies offense as they shot 2/13 and committed seven turnovers. They would trail 16-6 at the end of the quarter. After a quick 4-0 run by Michigan Tech to start the second, SCSU slowly started to find their offense as a three-pointer by Kristi Kottke brought the Huskies within eight points. St. Cloud State continued to chip away and gathered enough momentum to make a late push to end the half. A layup by Jada Eggebrecht with three seconds left set the score at 28-27 as St. Cloud State only trailed by a single point at the half.
Out of the break, MTU pushed their lead back up to double digits with a three-pointer at the 4:22 mark of the third. St. Cloud State again showed resilience with Alana Zarneke cashing a three to cap off a responding 10-0 run to tie the game. The teams traded blows in the final minutes of the third, but a three-pointer with a second left by MTU gave them a 50-49 lead headed into the fourth. As the first three quarters of the game had shown, this was a game of runs. MTU made theirs as a 7-0 run pushed their lead up to nine with 4:21 remaining. The Huskies then responded with their run as Brynn Olson knocked down a baseline jumper with 1:33 remaining to bring SCSU within a point as the score set at 67-66 after a 10-2 run. Each team cooled off for the next minute as the defenses stepped up. Michigan Tech had the ball with 41 seconds remaining a drew a key foul to reset and ultimately turn off the shot clock with 15 seconds left. SCSU would have to foul again, and Michigan Tech capitalized with two makes at the stripe to take a three-point lead. On the final possession for SCSU, Eggebrecht had her three-point attempt blocked, but Kristi Kottke corralled the offensive rebound. She kicked it out to Zarneke who fired a three with five seconds left. Zarneke narrowly missed but followed her shot and grabbed the rebound. With three seconds left, she had the ball at the free throw line and found an open CJ Adamson on the wing. As time expired, Adamson took the game-tying three which would've sent the game into overtime. Her shot just missed as it hit the back rim as the buzzer sounded. St. Cloud State would fall 69-66 in a resilient effort by the Huskies.
