SCSU starts 4-0 in NSIC for first time since 2012-13
St. Cloud, MN. – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (6-3, 4-0 NSIC) stayed undefeated in conference play as they defeated Augustana 70-61 for their fifth straight victory. A 17-0 scoring run that spanned over five minutes in the second half propelled the Huskies to the win.
The first four minutes of the game bounced back-and-forth, but after a layup by Luke Winkel, SCSU held an early 11-6 lead. St. Cloud State held onto that lead for most of the first half, but a 7-0 run capped off by an alley-oop gave Augustana a 32-30 lead with 1:10 left in the half. Winkel halted momentum for the Vikings by cashing a three as SCSU held a 33-32 lead going into the break.
The first eight minutes of the second half saw the tight play continue as Augustana held a modest 44-42 lead with 12:10 left in the game after they finished a layup. Anish Ramlall retook the lead for the Huskies as he cashed a three off an assist by Winkel. A few possessions later, Ramlall drained another triple, again off a feed from Winkel. The Ankeny, Iowa native wanted in on the three-point party that Ramlall started, so he splashed his own triple as SCSU now led 51-44. Wyatt Hawks came away with a steal on the defensive end as the Huskies started to roll with momentum. Kynan Philippe invited himself to the party as he splooshed a top of the key three off the steal and then assist by Ramlall as Halenbeck Hall roared with excitement as Augustana called a timeout. Another stop out of the timeout led to Hawks putting back a layup off an offensive rebound for the and-one. Hawks converted the three-point play at the line as the Huskies came away with another ensuing defensive stop. Following multiple looks and offensive rebounds at the rim, Bob Griechen tipped back a layup to cap off the 17-0 run for the Huskies as SCSU now led 59-44 with 6:47 remaining. The Vikings got as close as seven points the rest of the way, but timely makes and free throws closed out the win for SCSU. St. Cloud State ultimately came away with a 70-61 victory for their fifth straight win. This is the first time St. Cloud State has started 4-0 in the NSIC since the 2012-13 season where they also started 4-0. That season saw the Huskies go 20-8 and win the NSIC North Division.
