Huskies score game’s first three goals, hold on despite being outshot 44-20
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (12-17-1, 5-14-1 NCHC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and held on in a 4-2 win over No. 20/RV Colorado College (17-14-1, 11-10-1 NCHC) on Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. The win snapped an 11-game winless streak as the Huskies posted their first win since Dec. 29 and first NCHC win since Dec. 7.
Sophomore forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) led the charge offensively with a two-goal and three-point night while sophomore goaltender Isak Posch (Umea, Sweden) made a career-high 42 saves.
The Huskies jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead with its second-fastest goal to open a game this season, as Hall's first of two goals came at the 3:23 mark of the period. Sophomore forward Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) began the play by winning a puck battle behind the night and giving way to freshman forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.), who sent a centering pass to the front of the net that got deflected and found Hall's stick, who hammered the puck for the lead. SCSU then doubled its lead at the 9:33 mark right after a power play expired when sophomore forward Daimon Gardner's (Eagle Lake, Ontario) shot from the left dot hit hard of the CC goalie and right to Hall, who's rebound shot made it through the five-hole. The Huskies tacked onto its lead once again later in the period, executing a 3-on-2 odd-man rush. Hall led the rush before dropping a pass to Miettinen, who then dropped a pass back to Burnevik, who waited out the defense and fired a wrist shot near-side for the score and 3-0 lead at the first intermission.
In the second period, CC and SCSU traded goals with sophomore forward Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.) scoring his second goal of the weekend at the 8:14 mark when he and Gardner finished a 2-on-2 rush to extend the lead to 4-1. In the third period, the Huskies held off a swarming CC attack, as Posch made 16 of his 42 saves over the final 20 minutes to secure the 4-2 win.
