
St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey Announces 2025-26 Freshmen Class

SCSU adds six incoming freshmen, four from the State of Hockey, the reigning USHL Goaltender of the Year and two NHL Draft picks
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey announced the addition of six freshmen to solidify its roster ahead of the 2025-26 season, as announced on Wednesday. Among the group of newcomers are three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender. Four of the six incoming freshmen hail from the State of Hockey, two are NHL draft picks and two earned All-USHL honors for their efforts last season.
"Our staff is extremely excited to welcome this group of freshmen to St. Cloud," said head coach Brett Larson. "This class brings a dynamic mix of skill, leadership, and competitiveness, but just as important, each of these young men fits the mold of the high-character, team-first individuals we build our program around. We're especially proud to be keeping elite Minnesota talent close to home. This class has already achieved a great deal, and we believe their best hockey is still ahead of them. We can't wait to get started with this group."
Joe Belisle – D – 6-0 – 175 – Hugo, Minn. – Sioux Falls (USHL)
One of three incoming freshmen to suit up for White Bear Lake, Joe Belisle returns to the State of Hockey after two seasons with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL. The lefty defensemen scored four goals and 20 assists for 24 points in 115 games over two seasons for the Stampede while helping the team to two playoff appearances. Prior to junior hockey, Belisle played two seasons for White Bear Lake (2021-23) where he scored 15 goals and 34 assists for 49 points in 53 varsity games.
Tanner Henricks – D – 6-4 – 205 – Mission Viejo, Calif. – Lincoln (USHL)
A puck-moving defenseman with international experience, Tanner Henricks joins the Huskies after two seasons with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL. Henricks scored four goals and 38 assists for 42 points in two seasons for the Stars, including a 33-point season (4g/29a) in 2024-25 while helping Lincoln win the Anderson Cup for finishing first in the western conference standings and advance to the conference finals in the playoffs. Prior to Lincoln, Henricks played prep hockey for Shattuck St. Mary's (2020-22) and the Anaheim Junior Ducks (2022-23). The Mission Viejo, Calif., native represented the United States on the U.S. U18 Men's Select team at the 2023 Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Czechia/Slovakia where he helped the Americans capture bronze. He also participated in the 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase in Minneapolis in preparation for the 2026 World Junior Championships.
In the 2024 NHL Draft, Henricks was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the fourth round (101st overall).
Nolan Roed – F – 5-11 – 185 – White Bear Lake, Minn. – Tri-City (USHL)
Nolan Roed will join St. Cloud State after two highly successful seasons with the Tri-City Storm of the USHL where he scored 33 goals and 42 assists for 75 points in 86 games. The White Bear Lake, Minn., native led the Storm in scoring with 27 goals while adding 33 assists for 60 points in 61 games while earning 2024-25 All-USHL Third Team honors. A nearly point-per-game player, he was a key piece of Tri-City's special teams, scoring 12 power play goals and a USHL-leading seven shorthanded goals. Roed played three seasons for White Bear Lake where he recorded 153 points (76 goals, 77 assists) in 83 games and served as team captain for the 2023-24 season while leading the Bears to a state tournament appearance.
In June, Roed was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the seventh round (219th overall) of the 2025 NHL Draft.
Yan Shostak – G – 6-0 – 185 – Minsk, Belarus – Lincoln (USHL)
The reigning USHL Goaltender of the Year, Yan Shostak joins the Huskies after two highly successful seasons with the Lincoln Stars of the USHL. In 84 games over the past two seasons, Shostak produced a 49-30-2 record with a 2.73 goals-against-average and .907 save percentage while helping the Stars advance to the playoffs both seasons. This past season, Shostak earned 2024-25 All-USHL First Team honors and was named the league's goaltender of the year after posting a 29-12-1 mark in net with a 2.40 GAA and .911 S% while leading the Stars to an Anderson Cup title and conference finals appearance. Prior to coming stateside, Shostak played in Belarus and in Russia in the MHL.
Noah Urness – F – 5-10 – 170 – Roseau, Minn. – Sioux Falls (USHL)
Noah Urness, a four-year standout at Roseau High School, joins St. Cloud State after a 50-point season with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL. In his lone season of junior hockey (2024-25), Urness produce 18 goals and 32 assists for 50 points while helping Sioux Falls advance to the playoffs. Urness led the team in assists while ranking third in both goals and points while adding three game-winning goals and one power play goal. In four seasons of prep hockey with Roseau, Urness captained the Rams, scoring 117 goals and 127 assists for 244 points.
Aiden Welch – F – 6-2 – 210 – White Bear Lake, Minn. – Sioux Falls (USHL)
Aiden Welch, a 6-foot-2 forward from White Bear Lake joins the Huskies after two seasons of junior hockey in the USHL, spending the 2023-24 season with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and the 2024-25 season with the Sioux Falls Stampede. Welch produced 11 goals and 25 assists for 36 points in 108 games of between Cedar Rapids and Sioux Falls and helped the Stampede reach the playoffs this past season. Welch played four seasons of varsity hockey at White Bear Lake, was named captain during his senior season (2022-23) and produced 42 goals and 58 assists for 100 points in 90 games.
