
SCSU’s Burnevik, Gross and Hall Named Hobey Baker Award Nominees

The trio of Huskies are three of 87 college hockey players added to watch list for college hockey’s top honor
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Three student-athletes from St. Cloud State Men's Hockey have been nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, announced by the committee on Wednesday. The Huskies who are nominated for the award given to best annual player in college hockey are sophomore forward Austin Burnevik, junior forward Tyson Gross and junior forward Barrett Hall.
The Hobey Baker's tremendously popular fan-voting will run from now until Sunday, March 8 at midnight. College hockey fans can cast their vote by going to the voting website hobeybaker.com/vote. Fans can find their favorite player, then text to vote by following the instructions. The Hobey Baker Award, given annually to college hockey's top player, will have a second phase of fan balloting coming from the list of Top Ten Hobey Baker finalists beginning March 18 and closing March 29.
Award criteria include candidates exhibiting the exceptional character traits of the award's namesake, Hobey Baker. A legendary American hero, Baker was a World War I fighter pilot and was known as America's greatest amateur athlete in his day, excelling at hockey and football at Princeton University. Award candidates must demonstrate strength of character both on and off the ice, contribute to the integrity of his team and display outstanding skills in all phases of the game. Consideration should be given to scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.

Burnevik followed up his impressive freshman campaign with another stellar season as a sophomore averaging more than a point per game while producing 14 goals and 13 assists for 27 points with seven power play goals and three game-winning goals in 24 games. The Husky sophomore has ranked among the nation's top goal scorers all season with his seven power play goals ranking fifth nationally while his 14 goals overall rank eighth. He has scored a goal in 11 games this season, two goals in three contests and has recorded a point in 17 of 24 games. Burnevik scored a goal in five consecutive games between Oct. 18 and Nov. 1, the longest streak since Veeti Miettinen scored in six straight games between Oct. 20 – Nov. 11, 2023. He opened the season with a nine-game point streak, the second-longest streak in the nation this season. He also scored in the last two games of last season to move his point streak to 11 games, the longest point streak by a Husky since Jonny Brodzinski had a 13-game point streak from Dec. 12, 2012 - Feb. 2, 2012. In 59 career games, Burnevik has produced 27 goals and 28 assists for 55 points with 13 power play tallies. In SCSU's 39-year D-I history, Burnevik is just the 11th skater to begin his collegiate career with back-to-back seasons with 25+ points, and the first since Mikey Eyssimont (2015-18).
Gross has developed into one the nation's best centermen, ranking in the NCAA's top-15 in goals (13), power play goals (six), assists (18) and points (18). His 31 points rank eighth nationally while his 1.29 points per game is the best mark by a Husky since Kale Kossila posted 1.32 ppg in 2015-16. In conference games only, Gross leads all NCHC skaters in goals (11) and points (18). The Husky captain has three, three-point games and has scored a point in 20 of 24 games this season while finding the back of the net in 11 contests. In the faceoff dot, Gross has won an NCAA-best 350 faceoffs and ranks second in the nation in faceoff percentage among players with 100 attempts at 62.7 percent (350-208). He's won 15+ draws in 12 games and an NCAA-best 20 faceoff wins twice this season. He is the only play in the nation to have multiple streaks of 8+ games with a point, owning a nine-game streak to start the season and eight-game streak from Nov. 21 to Jan. 3. When he scored his 20th point with an assist against North Dakota on Dec. 6, Gross became the 23rd player in program history to begin their SCSU career with three consecutive 20-point seasons. In 94 career games, Gross has scored 29 goals and 47 assists for 76 points with 12 power play goals.
Hall has made steady strides in each of his three seasons in the black and red, improving from 16 and 22 points in his first two seasons to a career-best 23 points in 24 games this season. He's has already set career-highs in points (23), goals (10), power play goals (six) and game-winning goals (two), and is two assists away from his career-high for assists (15, 2024-25). Hall's six power play goals rank 10th nationally while his goals, assists and points all rank in the top-20 in the NCHC. In 91 career games, Hall has produced 25 goals and 36 assists for 61 points with 11 power play goals.
