Roed and Lurie Score in St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey’s Season-Opening Setback
10/3/2026 10:47:00 PM | Men's Hockey
Huskies comeback from down two goals before falling 3-2 in overtime to Bemidji State
BEMIDJI, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (0-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) fell behind 2-0, clawed its way back to 2-2 and then fell in overtime to Bemidji State (1-0-0, 0-0-0 CCHA), 3-2, on Saturday night at Sanford Center in Bemidji. Sophomore forward Nolan Roed (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and senior forward Charlie Lurie (Minnetonka, Minn.) each scored for the Huskies, but the Beavers overtime goal spoiled head coach Nick Oliver's debut as head coach.
Bemidji State jumped out to a quick start, scoring early in the first and early in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. The Beavers outshot the Huskies 17-4 in their quick start. Junior forward Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.) started the scoring play by taking the puck to the left dot before feeding sophomore defenseman Finn McLaughlin (Canmore, Alberta) at the blue line for a one-timer. The Beaver netminder was able to make the first stop, but the rebound fell to no man's land on the left side, where Roed was able to beat a defender to the puck and bury the rebound.
The scored remained 2-1 until seven minutes into the third period when junior defenseman Thor Byfuglien (Roseau, Minn.) and Lurie teamed up for a beauty of a goal to tie the score at 2-2. Freshman defenseman Nolan Stevenson (Shaunavon, Saskatchewan) settled the puck after a Bemidji State rush and passed to Byfuglien between the cirles in the defensive zone. The Husky junior blue liner then threaded a stretch pass between four Beaver players to Lurie at the offensive zone blue, who turned and raced up the ice for an all-alone breakaway, sending a wrist shot past the Beaver goaltender for his first goal as a Husky.
Neither team was able to score over the final 12:49, sending the season-opener to overtime. Senior forward Jake Southgate (North Battleford, Saskatchewan) stopped a breakaway but was called for a slashing penalty in the extra frame, and Bemidji State was able to capitalize on its fifth and final power play of the game to take the game, 3-2.
