Huskies complete two-goal comeback for third time this season
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (16-15-0, 9-12-0 NCHC) overcame a two-goal deficit for the third time this season with a 6-5 overtime win over Colorado College (11-14-4, 5-10-4 NCHC) on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. Senior defenseman Cooper Wylie (Stillwater, Minn.) netted the game-winning goal just 16 seconds into the overtime period to complete the comeback and seal the victory for the Huskies.
Despite outshooting the Tigers 13-4 in the first 20 minutes, Colorado College scored the game's first two goals to take a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. A wild second period would then ensue, with five goals scored in the middle 20 minutes, including three in the final three minutes. Freshman defenseman Tanner Henricks (Mission Viejo, Calif.) got the craziness started, scoring his second goal of the season at the 5:52 mark when he walked around a couple defenders towards the slot and beat the goalie in the five-hole. Colorado College scored the next goal, putting the Huskies down two goals for the second time in the game. The Huskies' top line struck next, with junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) making a pass up to junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) up the left wing before sending a cross-ice pass to sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.), who one-timed a shot from above the right dot for his 17th goal of the season. Just 1:22 later, the Huskies scored again, with freshman forward Nolan Roed (White Bear Lake, Minn.) finishing a breakaway to tie the score at 3-3 with 1:26 left in the period. SCSU seemed to have all the momentum, but CC would score just 48 seconds later to re-take the lead at the intermission, 4-3.
The Huskies wouldn't wait long to strike in the third period with redshirt senior forward Ryan Rosborough (Mt. Brydges, Ontario) hammering home a centering pass from junior forward Jack Reimann (Ham Lake, Minn.) at 2:44 to tie the score at 4-4. The tie wouldn't last long, however, as CC would score 2:00 later to take the lead again and 5-4. SCSU would then tie the score for the third time in the game when sophomore forward Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.) tapped in a rebound off a shot from Roed with 8:15 left in the game. Neither team scored in the final minutes of the game, forcing the Huskies' fourth overtime game of the season.
In the extra frame, Gross won the opening draw and got the puck in Wylie's possession. Wylie moved the puck back to Gross and then up to Burnevik at the blue line before back to Wylie in the high slot. The Husky captain let a wrist shot fire from far away, with the puck hitting left bar and then in for the game-winning score, his first of the season and third of his career.
