Thoreson scores twice and records three points, Ingram records two points
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – No. 3 North Dakota (24-7-1, 16-5-1) held off multiple St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (16-17-1, 9-14-1 NCHC) comebacks, with the Huskies falling 6-4 in its regular season finale on Saturday at Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. SCSU scored the game's first goal, then fell behind 3-1 before tying the game at 3-3 and 4-4, but could never regain the lead.
SCSU scored its fastest first goal of the season with sophomore forward Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.) cleaning up his own rebound on a breakaway chance at the 2:06 mark to put the Huskies up 1-0 early. Momentum shifted quickly however, with North Dakota scoring three goals in a four-minute span to take a 3-1 lead just eight minutes into the game. The Huskies then began their first comeback near the end of the period, first with freshman defenseman Tanner Henricks (Mission Viejo, Calif.) making an impressive toe-drag and snipe to pull within one goal with 1:40 left in the opening period.
Thoreson struck quick again in the second period, scoring 93 seconds into the middle frame when a North Dakota clearing pass was intercepted by Thoreson in the slot and sent quickly into the back of the net to tie the score at 3-3. UND re-took the lead a 4-3 at 7:37 before senior forward Adam Ingram (West St. Paul, Manitoba) made a play and extended his goal streak to three games. Ingram got in-between two Fighting Hawk defenders and got his stick on a puck around the red line, forcing a breakaway where he was all alone and finished with a backhanded shot through the five-hole to make the score 4-4.
In the final period, both teams traded unsuccessful power play attempts before North Dakota's Jack Kernan scored the eventual game-winning goal at 13:40. UND added an empty net goal from Ellis Rickwood to close the scoring at 6-4.
