Huskies lose 2-0 lead, drop first game of NCHC Quarterfinals
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (16-18-1, 9-14-1 NCHC) dropped a heartbreaker to No. 10 Minnesota Duluth (21-13-1, 11-12-1 NCHC), 4-3, in overtime in the first game of the NCHC Quarterfinals on Friday at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minn. The Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the second period, but an extra attacker goal and an overtime power play goal gave the Bulldogs the edge and 1-0 series lead.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead just 6:33 into the game when sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) sent a wrist shot to the back of the net on a breakaway with assists credited to freshman forward Nolan Roed (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and senior defenseman Mason Reiners (Edina, Minn.). Burnevik's team-leading 20th goal was the only goal of the first 20 minutes as SCSU took a 1-0 lead at the first intermission.
SCSU then extended its lead to 2-0 on sophomore forward Gavyn Thoreson's (Andover, Minn.) 11th goal of the season. Thoreson forced a Bulldog turnover and then flung a shot towards the net from under the goal line, which deflected off the UMD goaltender and across the goal line. UMD would score its first goal of the game at 16:02 to make the score 2-1 after two periods.
In the third period, UMD first tied the score at 12:45 when Adam Kleber scored his third goal of the season. The Huskies didn't wait to respond, scoring 1:49 later when Roed hammered home a one-timer off a beautiful pass from Thoreson to take a 3-2 lead. UMD pulled their goalie with around two minutes remaining and scored an extra attacker goal with 29 seconds to tie the game at 3-3 and force overtime.
The Huskies took a high sticking penalty at 3:26 of overtime and UMD would score on the ensuing draw to take the game 4-3.
