Gross Scores Twice in Huskies’ 4-1 Road Win over Arizona State
2/7/2026 12:56:00 AM | Men's Hockey
Gross’ two goals and three points leads to win in SCSU’s first game at Mullett Arena
TEMPE, Ariz. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (14-15-0, 7-12-0 NCHC) got back in the win column with a 4-1 win over Arizona State (13-15-1, 6-10-1 NCHC) on Friday night at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Ariz. Junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) scored twice and had three points to lead the way, while sophomore goaltender Patriks Berzins (Talsi, Latvia) got a late call to the starting lineup, stopping 33 of 34 Sun Devil shots en route to his eighth win of the season between the pipes.
Neither team scored in the first 20 minutes despite both have chances on the power play, as SCSU held the slight advantage in shots on goal, 10-8. The Huskies were called for their second penalty of the night just 1:48 into the second period but flipped momentum on a scoring chance less than a minute into the man advantage. The puck was at the point when Gross was able to get his stick on a pass from an ASU skater, deflecting it towards sophomore defenseman Finn Loftus (Blaine, Minn.), who started a 2-on-1 break with Gross the other way. Loftus toe-dragged around a defender in the slot and fed Gross on the backside for an easy tap-in past the goalie through the five-hole for the 1-0 lead. Arizona State would then tie the game at 1-1 at 17:20 on a rebound attempt from Noah Powell.
The game remained 1-1 for more than 15 minutes before SCSU's captain was able to strike again. Arizona State was seemingly about to break the puck out of the defensive zone, but junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) kept the puck in before feeding sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) and then over to Gross alone in the slot for a wrister and goal to make it 2-1. SCSU was called for icing with 2:30 left in the game, causing Arizona State to pull its goalie for an extra attacker. SCSU responded with sound defense and scored empty net goals from junior forward Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) and Burnevik to ice the game, 4-1.
