Trey Fessler Named Head Coach of St. Cloud State Golf

Fessler named first head coach in restart of programs, will lead both men’s and women’s team in 2026-27
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State University Director of Athletics Holly Schreiner has announced Trey Fessler as the next head coach of men's and women's golf. Fessler is the first head coach hired following the restart of the program for the 2026-27 season. He is the 19th overall coach of the men's program and the 10th coach of the women's program.

Fessler is an accomplished collegiate and professional golfer who earned 2020 NJCAA First Team All-America honors and PGA Tour status in Latin America from 2021-23. In the professional ranks, Fessler has won 23 events, including the 2025 Minnesota PGA Golf Champions and 2025 Minnesota PGA Assistant Championship tournaments. He is currently a teaching professional at Albany Golf Club.
Fessler competed collegiately at Mesa Community College (2019-20) and Tampa (D-II, 2020-21). At Mesa, he was named a 2020 NJCAA First Team All-American and Jack Nicklaus Award finalist after posting a 70.86 scoring average. He also placed second at the Chandler Gilberts Men's Tourney (69-64) and third at the NJCAA DII National Preview (71-71). He competed in five events with Tampa, posting his lowest score (+1) at the Saint Leo Invitational and finished tied for 15th at the 2021 Sunshine State Conference Tournament.
The Hanover, Minn., native competed for St. Michael-Albertville High School where he was a six-year letterwinner and six-year state participant, finishing runner-up twice. He holds the high school state record in Minnesota with a round of 63 and participated in the 2016 and 2019 US Junior Amateur Championships.
St. Cloud State previously sponsored men's golf for 84 seasons from 1931-32 to 2019-20 (no competition from 1941-46 due to World War II) and women's golf for 45 seasons from 1975-76 to 2019-20. The men's team won 10 conference championships, including the 2013 and 2014 NSIC titles, competed in 13 consecutive NCAA regionals from 2002-14 and advanced to the NCAA Championships twice, earning a 16th place finish in 2004 and a 17th place finish in 2006. The women's team competed in three NCAA regionals from 2002-04 and advanced to the NCAA Championships once, earning an eighth-place finish in 2004.
St. Cloud State will be the 11th school in the NSIC to sponsor men's golf, and the 14th to sponsor women's golf. The 2027 NSIC Men's Golf Tournament is slated for April 20-23, 2027, at a host site to be determined, while the 2027 NSIC Women's Golf Tournament is scheduled for April 15-18, 2027, in Blue Springs, Mo.
