St. Cloud, Minn. - In a showdown between two top 20 ranked men's college hockey programs, the #15 St. Cloud State University Huskies (5-4-0, 3-2-0 WCHA) dropped a 3-0 decision against #6 North Dakota (4-2-1, 2-0-1 WCHA) on Friday, Nov. 9 at the National Hockey and Event Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
North Dakota scored goals in each period to capture the victory, which was St. Cloud State's first loss at home during the 2012-13 season and the Huskies' first loss at the NHEC since a 3-2 OT setback against Alaska Anchorage on Feb. 18, 2012.
UND lit the lamp early in the game with the game winner by Brendan O'Donnell at :48 of the first period. He was assisted on the play by Connor Gaarder and Mark MacMillan. UND hit again in the opening minute of the second period with a goal by Carter Rowney at :43 of the second. Corban Knight and Derek Forbort added assists on the goal for UND.
In the final period, MacMillan chalked up a shorthanded goal at 17:33 with the solo assist going to Nick Mattson.
In the contest, SCSU outshot UND by a 32-26 margin, which included an impressive 14-5 shot total for the Huskies in the first period. On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-4 and UND was 0-of-1 in the game. The game was marked by relatively few penalties as SCSU was whistled for two and UND had five penalties.
SCSU's Brooks Bertsch and Jonny Brodzinski led the Huskies with four shots on net apiece.
In the nets, SCSU sophomore Ryan Faragher posted 23 saves as his season record moves to 4-4-0. Clarke Saunders of UND earned the game's number one star with 32 saves and the shutout victory.
