#17 St. Cloud State Tames Tigers With 3rd Period Rally

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #17 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (10-7-0, 8-5-0 WCHA) moved into second place in the WCHA race with a 5-3 victory over Colorado College (8-9-2, 5-5-1 WCHA) on Friday, Dec. 14 at the National Hockey and Event Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
Down 2-1 at the end of the second period, the Huskies rallied with two goals from freshman forward David Morley and the game winner from freshman forward Kalle Kossila in the third period. The evening was capped by an empty net goal from junior Nic Dowd to make the final 5-3.
The Huskies now have 16 league points and are tied for second along with Minnesota State. Denver leads the WCHA with 17 points in league play. DU skated to a 1-1 tie at Bemidji State tonight, while MSU defeated Nebraska Omaha 6-3 in Omaha.
Colorado College controlled the scoreboard in the first half of play with a goal by William Rapuzzi at 16:11 of the first period. Assists on the play were posted by Jared Hanson and Peter Stoykewych. CC pushed its lead to 2-0 at 14:56 of the second period with an even-strength goal by Cody Bradley with assists from Stoykewych and Alex Krusheinyski.
The Huskies broke the shutout at 15:29 of the second period when senior Drew LeBlanc started a breakaway and beat CC goalie Joe Howe. On the play, LeBlanc's first shot was stopped by Howe but he grabbed the rebound and put it on net with the final tap in by freshman Jonny Brodzinski, who was credited with the goal. This was Brodzinski's sixth goal of the 2012-13 campaign.
The goal energized the Huskies heading into the final period of play. Morley tied the game up at 6:45 of the third with his first goal of the evening. Dowd added the first assist on the play, while senior Taylor Johnson posted the second assist for the Huskies.
Morley made it 3-2 in favor of the Huskies at 10:14 with a power play marker as senior Ben Hanowski and LeBlanc both carded assists on the play. This was Hanowski's eighth helper of the year and it marked LeBlanc's team leading 18th assist of the year.
Of note, LeBlanc currently leads all NCAA Divison I players this season with 18 assists this season. This week's WCHA Rookie of the Week, Morley ended his day with two goals and he now has scored five goals in the last three games for the Huskies.
The SCSU rookies continued to dominate the scoresheet as Kossila earned the game winner with a power play goal at 12:14 of the third. Nick Jensen and Brodzinski each provided assists on the play for SCSU. Kossila has made a strong debut this winter and he currently leads all Division I rookies this season with nine goals.
CC got back into the mix at 19:15 of the third period after the Tigers pulled their goalie late in the game in favor of the extra attacker. Hunter Fejes converted for CC with his second goal of the season to make it 4-3. The Huskies then iced the contest at 19:40 of the third with an empty netter by Dowd as Jensen posted the lone assist on the play. Jensen ranks first among Division I blueliners this winter with 13 assists. Both Dowd and Kossila currently pace the Huskies this season with nine goals apiece.
In the contest, SCSU outshot the Tigers 29-25. SCSU has now outshot their opponents in the Huskies' last five games played this season. On the power play, SCSU was 2-of-5 and CC was 0-of-4 in the contest.
Sophomore Ryan Faragher was the goalie of record for the Huskies with 22 saves in the game. Howe made 24 saves in the game for CC.
The two teams will complete the weekend series on Saturday, Dec. 15, with a 7:07 p.m. game at the NHEC.

TEDDY BEAR TOSS - DEC. 15
The second annual SCSU Teddy Bear Toss will take place during the first intermission of the Huskies' game against Colorado College on Dec. 15. All fans are encouraged to bring a new or gently used Teddy Bear or stuffed animal to throw onto the ice during the first intermission. All of the toys collected from the Teddy Bear Toss will be donated to the St. Cloud area Toys For Tots campaign.
