#17 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey Sweep CC with 3-1 Win

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #17 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (11-7-0, 9-5-0 WCHA) moved into first place in the WCHA on Saturday, Dec. 15 with a big 3-1 victory over Colorado College (8-10-2, 5-6-0 WCHA) at the National Hockey and Event Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory moves the Huskies' WCHA point total to 18, which places them atop the league standings heading into the Holiday break. A 5-1 loss by Denver at Bemidji State and a 5-1 loss by Minnesota State at Nebraska Omaha tonight provided the Huskies with their first place status.
The Huskies will enjoy a bye week on Dec. 21-22 before returing to action on Dec. 27-28 for a pair of non-conference matches against RPI at the NHEC. SCSU played a sound defensive game as the Huskies outshot the Tigers 30-17 on Dec. 15. SCSU goalie Ryan Faragher turned away 16 shots in the match and the Huskies were also 2-of-2 on the penalty kill in the contest.
On offense, rookie forward Kalle Kossila opened the scoring with a first period goal at 16:41. He took a long up ice pass from Kevin Gravel and beat CC goalie Josh Thorimbert on the play. The second assist on the play was provided by freshman blueliner Ethan Prow, a grad of nearby Sauk Rapids-Rice High School.
This was Kossila's 10th goal of the season which places him first on the team for goal scoring and it also places him first in the nation for goals by a freshmen this season.
CC tied the game in the second period with an unassisted goal by Joe Marciano at 6:28. The Husky defense played shutout hockey after that point as it allowed only six shots on net in the third period.
SCSU's Ben Hanowski netted the eventual game winner at 11:59 of the second period with his fifth goal of the 2012-13 season. Junior forward Nic Dowd and sophomore blueliner Andrew Prochno provided the assists on the play. This was Dowd's 14th assist of the season and his 23rd point of the year.
To cap the evening, rookie Jonny Brodzinksi scored a goal in his third consecutive game with a marker at 13:37 of the second. Prochno charted the first assist on the play and senior forward Drew LeBlanc provided the second assist.
LeBlanc owns a seven-game point streak headed into the break and he ranks first in the nation with 19 assists this year.
On the evening, both teams were held scoreless on the power play as the Huskies were 0-of-4 and CC was 0-of-2. Faragher was the goalie of record with 16 saves as his season record moves to 10-6-0 in the 2012-13. Thorimbert took the loss for CC with 27 saves in the game.

The upcoming SCSU games against RPI (Dec. 27-28) and Northern Michigan (Jan. 4-5) have been designated as youth hockey nights at the NHEC. All youth hockey players (grades 8 and under) will be admitted FREE to the games when they wear their team jersey to the game and are accompanied by a paid adult.
