#16 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey Falls to RPI, 4-3

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #16 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (11-8-0, 9-5-0 WCHA) lost a 4-3 decision against non-conference rival Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (5-6-4, 1-5-2 ECAC) on Thursday, Dec. 27 at the National Hockey and Event Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Huskies, who will match up against the Engineers again on Friday, Dec. 28 at the NHEC in St. Cloud. Holiday special tickets priced at $10 for general admission tickets are available for this game. SCSU earned an early lead in the game on Dec. 27 with a pair of first period goals that provided the Huskies with a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.
Freshman forward Jonny Brodzinski posted his eighth goal of the season at 15:55 of the first period to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. Assists on the play were added by Nick Jensen and Drew LeBlanc. This marked the fourth consecutive game that Brodzinski has scored a goal for the Huskies, while the assist was Jensen's 14th of the year.
SCSU's hot freshmen class struck again at 18:40 of the first period when rookie forward Kalle Kossila charted his team-leading 11th marker of the campaign to give SCSU its 2-0 lead. Sophomore defender Andrew Prochco coined his 10th assist of the year on the play, while LeBlanc provided the second assist. LeBlanc now has a team leading 21 assists this season and he also leads the club with 26 points in 2012-13.
LeBlanc paces all NCAA Division I players this winter with 21 assists, while Kossila leads the NCAA rookies with 11 goals this year.
RPI rallied in the second period with three unanswered goals to gain a 3-2 lead. Ryan Haggerty scored first for RPI at 1:49 of the second with assists from Mike Zalewski and Bo Dolan. Milos Bubela made it 2-2 with his goal at 6:10 of the second period and he added a second goal at 9:09 of the second to push the Engineers' lead to 3-2.
In the third period, SCSU got back on track with an even-strength goal by junior Cory Thorson at 12:33. He was set up on the play with passes from freshmen forwards Joey Benik and Jimmy Murray. This was Thorson's sixth goal of the season and Murray's fourth assist. The assist was Benik's first collegiate point as he made his debut for the Huskies' tonight after missing the first half of the season due to an injury.
RPI settled the deal at 17:48 of the third period with a goal by Mark McGowan with assists from CJ Lee and Marty O'Grady.
In the contest, SCSU outshot the Engineers 22-21 as both teams went scoreless on the power play (SCSU was 0-2 and RPI was 0-1).
In the nets, Ryan Farahger was the goalie of record for the Huskies with 17 saves. RPI netminder Jason Kasdorf opened play and made 11 saves and allowed two goals before leaving the game due to an injury near the end of the second period. Scott Diebold earned the win in relief with eight saves and one goal allowed over 20:36 minutes played.
