#19 Huskies Roll to 90-59 Win over Ashford University

St. Cloud, Minn. – The 19th-ranked St. Cloud State University men's basketball team closed out 2012 with a 90-59 non-conference win over Ashford (Iowa) University Saturday afternoon in Halenbeck Hall.
The Huskies improved to 8-1 on the season and return to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) action on Friday, Jan. 4, when SCSU hosts the University of Mary at 8 p.m. Ashford University, an NAIA Independent is 11-5 overall following the loss.
The Ashford Saints hung with the Huskies for much of the first half extending it's lead to 29-21 with 6:18 on the clock on a pair of Vesteinn Sveinsson free throws.
The Huskies went on a 17-0 run to finish the half and take a 38-29 lead into the intermission. Junior center Tim Bergstraser (St. Joseph), playing in his first game since last March had five points in the run and senior guard Shaun Jensen (Spring Lake Park) had six points to propel the Huskies.
St. Cloud State built a 21 point lead by the 7:35 mark of the second half and outscored the Saints 17-7 in the final six minutes for the victory margin.
Jensen led the Huskies in scoring with 21 points. He also had six assists and two steals. Senior forward Theo Rothstein (St. Michael) dropped in 12 points and first year guard Tyson Kalien (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) added a season high ten points. Bergstraser, coming back from a knee injury finished the game with nine points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Connor Niehaus (Fremont, Neb.) grabbed a team high seven rebounds, and posted a season high six assists and three steals. Junior transfer Chris Larson (Hudson, Iowa) swatted a season high six blocks.
All 14 Huskies that dressed for the game found the scoring column. The Huskies shot an impressive 73.3 percent in the second half making 22 of 30 shots from the field and finished the game at 65.5 percent. SCSU shot 64.3 percent from three point range making nine of 14 attempts.
Ashford's Sveinsson lead all scorers with 22 points and Joshua Little had a game high ten rebounds. Three other Saints scored in double figures with Brandon Weston scoring 12 points on three of five shooting from beyond the arc. Tim Huber had 11 points and DeAndre Lowery ten points.
The Saints shot 52.4 percent in the second half and finished the game at 40.4 percent. Ashford held a 29-27 rebounding edge over the Huskies.
