#15 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey to Host Northern Michigan

The #15 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (12-8-0, 9-5-0 WCHA) will open 2013 with a weekend non-conference series at the National Hockey and Event Center in St. Cloud, Minn. against Northern Michigan University (6-10-3, 2-9-3 WCHA). The game on Jan. 4 will start at 7:37 p.m. and the game scheduled for Jan. 5 will start at 7:07 p.m.

HUSKY HOCKEY NEWS AND NOTES:
LAST TIME ON ICE: SCSU capped the 2012 portion of its season with a series split against RPI on Dec. 27-28 at the NHEC. The Huskies opened the series with a tough 4-3 setback against the Engineers on Dec. 27. SCSU completed the series on Dec. 28 with a 2-1 win in St. Cloud. SCSU moves to 12-8-0, 9-5-0 WCHA with the win over RPI. SCSu was up 2-0 vs. RPI on Dec. 27 before allowing the Engineers to score three unanswered goals to earn the win...on Dec. 28, SCSU staged its own comeback with two unanswered goals in the second period to earn the 2-1 victory. Ben Hanowski and Drew LeBlanc added the two goals for the Huskies in the win. On the weekend, LeBlanc finished with four points (1g/3a) for the Huskies.
ON A ROLL: SCSU senior captain Drew LeBlanc continues to impress in 2012-13. He currently owns a nine-game point streak and notched one goal and three assists in the weekend series against RPI. He currently leads the nation with 28 points and 22 assists. In the month of December, LeBlanc has posted 10 points (1g/9a) and he has 17 points to his credit in the Huskies' last 11 games played. He has played in all 20 games for the Huskies this season after missing most of the 2011-12 season as an injury redshirt... On the topic of career leaders, Drew LeBlanc now has 35 goals, 90 assists and 125 points in his time at SCSU. He currently ranks 11th in the team record for career points and he needs just five points to move into the Husky top 10 ahead of Brandon Sampair, who had 129 points from 1998-01. LeBlanc is just the sixth player during the Huskies' DI era to score 90 assists in his career. LeBlanc is tied for fifth in the career assist charts along with Joe Motzko (1999-03) at 90 apiece. Garrett Roe is the team's all-time assist leader with 113 from 2007-11.
HE MAKES HIS DEBUT: SCSU freshman Joey Benik made his collegiate playing debut on Dec. 27 against RPI. He replied to the call by earning his first point as a college player with the first assist on Cory Thorson's goal in the third period on Dec. 27. Benik had missed the first half of the 2012-13 season due to an injury.
THE FUTURE IS HERE: Rookie sensation Kalle Kossila added another goal to his totals on Dec. 27. A resident of Finland, Kossila leads all DI rookies this season with 11 goals. Kossila has five goals in his last six outings for the Huskies and he brings a four-game point streak into the NMU series. Another of SCSU's freshmen standout is forward Jonny Brodzinski, who added a goal and an assist in the series against RPI. Brodzinski has a five-game point streak going into the NMU games and he currently ranks third on the team with eight goals. Brodzinski leads the Huskies this year with a +14 on the plus/minus, while Kossila ranks second at +13.
BIG BEN: Senior Ben Hanowski continues to draw closer to the SCSU 100-point club. On Dec. 28, Hanowski scored his 51st career goal in the win over RPI. He now has 51 goals, 45 assists and 96 career points as a Husky. Hanowski would become the 24th member of the Husky 100-point club (all games played at the DI level).
APPROACHING MILESTONE: The next victory for SCSU head coach Bob Motzko will be his 150th career win. In eight seasons at SCSU, Motzko owns a 149-117-34 career record.
HUSKY NOTES: SCSU has outshot is opponents in the last eight games and overall this season, the Huskies have outshot their opponents 579-508 this year. SCSU allowed a season-low 15 shots on goal during its 2-1 victory over RPI on Dec. 28....The SCSU penalty kill has been impressive in recent games as the Huskies have not allowed a power play goal since Nov. 30. The Huskies are 13-of-13 on the PK during this stretch. Of note, SCSU now ranks 55th in the nation among DI teams with just 9.5 penalty minutes per game in 2012-13...SCSU ranks 11th in the nation among DI teams with a scoring average of 3.35 goals per game this winter...junior Nick Jensen leads the nation's defensemen with 14 assists in 2012-13. Jensen's assist on Dec. 27 was his 70th career point at SCSU. He is just the sixth SCSU blueliner to reach the 70 point plateau. Other SCSU defensive legends to score 70-plus points in their college careers were Kelly Hultgren (107 points from 1991-95), Taj Melson (87 points from 1992-96), Justin Fletcher (86 points from 2003-07), Garrett Raboin (83 points from 2006-10) and Bret Hedican (77 points from 1988-91).
