St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State women's hockey team was back at home Friday night as they welcomed #6 University of North Dakota to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. It was a battle but North Dakota prevailed by a final score of 2-1 over the Huskies.
North Dakota took a 1-0 lead over St. Cloud just 48 seconds into the game as Michelle Karvinen put the puck into the back of the net.
A quick goal caught the Huskies off guard but they came back battling making great defensive stops to hold North Dakota. Going into the first intermission, UND was outshooting the Huskies by a margin of eight to five.
The Huskies came out in the second period with a fire behind them and on their second power-play opportunity of the game. SCSU's senior Julia Gilbert capitalized on a five-on-four situation to tie the game up 1-1 just 11 seconds into the period. Assists on the goal were charted to senior Molli Mott and sophomore Skye Kelly.
St. Cloud's offense would pick up in the second period to outshoot North Dakota 14-7 for a total after two periods of 19 to 15 in favor of the Huskies.
The game would stay tied until the 14:35 mark of the third period where Karvinen would get a bounce off of a skate to seal a 2-1 lead over St. Cloud.
Earning the start in goal for the Huskies was junior Julie Friend as she recorded a total 34 saves, while UND's Shelby Amsley-Benzie posted 24 for the win. Friend moves her record to 0-3-2 on the season. On the power-play St. Cloud was 1-6 while UND was 0-6 on the night.
