Huskies earn third straight WCHA sweep, Olson nets first career goal
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 9 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (8-2-0, 6-0-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) defeated Bemidji State 3-1 in the series finale on Saturday evening at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center for its program record third consecutive series sweep to start WCHA play. Freshman forward Sophie Olson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) netted her first career goal in the win as the Huskies tied its program record for best 10-game start to a season (8-2-0).
Freshman forward Madelyn Lee (White Bear Lake, Minn.) won a puck battle on the left half wall and sent a beautiful backhand pass through the circle to a streaking Olson, who was unmarked and ripped a shot past the blocker side of the BSU netminder for her first career tally midway through the first period.
Senior forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) doubled the Huskies lead seven minutes into the second period, scoring her second goal of the weekend. Freshman forward Maria Mikaelyan (Moscow, Russia) took a shot from just inside the blueline and Sundelin got position in front of the Bemidji State defender net front and deflected the puck into the back of the net.
The Beavers (1-7-0, 0-6-0 WCHA) cut their deficit in half with a power play goal with just over five minutes remaining in the third period, but senior forward Payton Holloway (Tomash, Wis.) scored SCSU's first empty net goal of the season with 22 seconds left to ice the game.
Freshman goaltender Alexis Ehrman (Calgary, Alberta) was solid in net, not allowing an even strength goal and making 23 saves on 24 shots for a .958 save percentage.
