Huskies erase two goal deficit, record 3-2 overtime win
ST. PAUL, Minn. – No. 10/9 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (5-2-0, 3-0-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) erased a two goal deficit against (RV) St. Thomas at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena on Friday evening to remain perfect in conference play. Senior forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) netted the overtime winner to clinch the 3-2 win for the Huskies.
The Huskies found themselves in an early hole after St. Thomas (3-4-0, 1-4-0 WCHA) scored a pair of goals in the first 11:20 of the first period including a shorthanded breakaway. In the final five minutes of the period Sundelin was taken down on a breakaway opportunity and SCSU elected to take a penalty shot, which was also taken by Sundelin, but saved by the Tommie goaltender. UST would take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission despite being outshot by the Huskies 8-4.
SCSU cut its deficit in half 8:58 into the second period when junior forward Myah Krueger (Stillwater, Minn.) redirected a shot from sophomore defender Maélie Pion (Sherbrooke, Quebec) into the back of the net.
Over halfway through the third period, the Huskies scored its second straight goal just four seconds after their power play expired. Sophomore forward Maria Mikaelyan (Moscow, Russia) took a pass from Pion and wheeled around the top of the right circle and fired a wrister that found the back of the net.
The Huskies killed off a 4-on-3 during the final 51 seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime and then the final 1:09 of the penalty during overtime.
Once SCSU gained the zone, junior defender Siiri Yrjölä (Vantaa, Finland) made a drop pass to Sundelin near the blue line and with the help of a pick by senior forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec), she skated by a Tommie defender and walked in uncovered, sending a shot just under the bar into the back of the net.
