Ehrman posts shutout in first career start, Mikaelyan and Sauriol record three points as Huskies win four ranked matchups in a row for first time ever
MANKATO, Minn. – No. 13 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (4-0-0, 2-0-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) defeated No. 15/14 Minnesota State (2-2-0, 0-2-0 WCHA) 3-0 to earn its second consecutive series sweep on Saturday evening at the Mayo Clinic HSEC in Mankato. The win extended the program's longest win streak against ranked opponents to four games as the Huskies began a new season 4-0-0 for just the second time in program history.
The Huskies were led by sophomore forward Maria Mikaelyan (Moscow, Russia), senior forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) and freshman goaltender Alexis Ehrman (Calgary, Alberta). Mikaelyan (two goals and one assist) and Sauriol (one goal and two assists) each tallied three points while Ehrman posted a 33-save shutout in her first career start between the pipes.
After the first 45+ minutes of the game went scoreless, Mikaelyan scored her fourth goal of the weekend (third on the power play) to put the Huskies on the board first. The tic-tac-toe play was executed perfectly by senior forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) and Sauriol who each made quick passes and eventually found Mikaelyan open in the slot where she buried the puck into the back of the net.
Just under six minutes later, Sauriol scored her first goal of the weekend and the Huskies fifth power play tally of the series to put SCSU up 2-0. Sundelin took a shot from the top of the left circle and although the shot was saved, it was not controlled by the MSU netminder and the puck trickled to Sauriol on the backside and she tapped it in.
Mikaelyan pushed the Huskies lead to three with just under three minutes remaining after receiving a beautiful backhand pass from Sauriol in the high slot and took a sliding one-timer that found its way past the Maverick goaltender.
After making her first career appearance in Friday's 5-2 win, Ehrman posted a 33-save shutout in her first career start.
