Huskies score two unanswered goals, extend program record best start to WCHA play to 5-0-0
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 9 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (7-2-0, 5-0-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) scored two unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 to take down Bemidji State 2-1 on Friday evening at the newly renovated Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Fifth-year defender Regan Bulger (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories) scored her first-ever goal in what turned out to be the game-winner, extending the Huskies program record for wins to open conference play (5-0-0).
The Beavers (1-6-0, 0-5-0 WCHA) got on the board first, 9:08 into the first period, scoring a goal with just one second remaining on its first and only power play opportunity of the game.
SCSU didn't trail for long however, as senior forward Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) scored just 19 seconds later to tie the game at 1. Senior forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) had the puck just in front of the goal line below the right circle and found Sundelin who was wide open at the point. Sundelin wound up and rocketed a slapshot that beat the BSU netminder glove-side.
Later in the period, Bulger gathered a puck at the left dot after it was deflected off the skate of a Beaver and fired a shot towards the net that snuck between the legs of the goaltender for her first career goal. The goal turned out to be the game-winner as SCSU held on for a 2-1 victory after the final 44 minutes went scoreless.
Junior goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö (Ylöjärvi, Finland) was excellent in net, not allowing an even strength goal and making 25 saves on 26 shots for a .962 save percentage.
