Sauriol (two assists) and Sundelin (two goals) record two points, Huskies fall 4-2
HAMILTON, N.Y. – No. 8/10 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (4-1-0, 2-0-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) fell for the first time of the new season, dropping a 4-2 decision to No. 14 Colgate on Friday night at the Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton. Senior forwards Sofianna Sundelin (Ulvila, Finland) and Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) each tallied two points, continuing their strong starts to the season.
Colgate (3-0-0, 0-0-0 ECAC Hockey) struck first, taking a 1-0 lead 6:12 into the first period, but less than a minute later the Huskies earned the game's first power play opportunity and took advantage, tying the game at one after Sundelin knocked a loose puck into the back of the net. After a strong breakout, the puck was knocked to sophomore forward Maria Mikaelyan (Moscow, Russia) who was driving through the slot and took a shot that was saved but not controlled and Sundelin was eventually able to push the puck into the open net.
The Raiders took a 2-1 lead just 1:40 into the second period, but SCSU yet again responded with a goal of their own less than a minute after to tie the game at two. Sophomore defender Maélie Pion (Sherbrooke, Quebec) led the Huskies rush into the zone and sent a pass through three Colgate defenders to Sundelin who was skating through the left circle right after Mikaelyan made an incredible effort to hold herself from being offsides. Sundelin netted her second goal of the game when she sent a wrister into the back of the net from an extremely sharp angle at the bottom the circle.
With one second left on an SCSU power play in the first five minutes of the third period, Colgate converted on a one-on-zero breakaway to take a 3-2 lead before adding an empty netter in the final minute to hand the Huskies their first loss of the new season.
