Huskies concede four first period goals, fall 7-2
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 9/8 St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (8-4-0, 6-2-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) dropped its series finale against No. 3 Wisconsin, 7-2 on Friday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
The Badgers (8-2-0, 4-2-0 WCHA) raced out to 4-0 first period lead, scoring their four goals across a 12 minute stretch.
SCSU regrouped during the first intermission and played much better in the second period, getting on the scoresheet early. Senior forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) wrapped around the net and sent a pass to senior forward Payton Holloway (Tomah, Wis.) who was waiting on the doorstep and fired a one-timer off the post and into the back of the net.
The Huskies then added its second goal of the game and cut its deficit to two 2:48 into the third period. Fifth year defender Regan Bulger (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories) fired a shot from just inside the SCSU blueline and it was blocked by a Wisconsin defender in front of the net, but sophomore forward Maria Mikaelyan (Moscow, Russia) gathered the rebound, spun around and fired the puck into the net before the Badger netminder could recover from being screened out.
Wisconsin scored its fifth goal of the game to push its lead back up to four 4:23 later before tacking on a pair of shorthanded goals (including one on an empty net) after being assessed a five-minute major penalty with 13:18 left in the third period.
