Damarius Cruz Basketball Seals SCSU Win over Wayne State, 70-66

Wayne, Neb. – St. Cloud State University junior guard Damarius Cruz (Robbinsdale) hit a three with :09 seconds left in the game to seal a 70-60 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win over Wayne State College Friday night in Wayne, Neb.
With the win the Huskies improve to 16-3 overall and 12-3 in the NSIC. St. Cloud State will play at Augustana College Saturday. Wayne State dropped to 12-9 overall and 6-9 in the league.
St. Cloud State has won four straight games and is 9-1 on the road this season.
Cruz and senior forward Theo Rothstein (St. Michael) led the Huskies in scoring with 16 points each. Cruz made six of 11 field goals, including three of five three-point baskets.
Rothstein got into foul trouble and only played 25 minutes. He made the final free throw of the game to give the Huskies a four-point cushion. Rothstein needs five points to reach the 1,000 point mark for his career.
Senior guard Shaun Jensen (Spring Lake Park) made nine of 11 free throw attemtps and finished the night with 12 points.
The Huskies shot 41.7 percent from the field.
Wayne State was led by Amry Shelby who topped all players with 21 points. He made eight of eight free throws in the game. The Wildcats out rebounded the Huskies 28-24 and shot 53.3 percent from the field.
St. Cloud State jumped out to an early lead and posted the largest lead of 11 points with 8:13 left in the first half. The Huskies held a 34-29 half time lead.
Wayne State fought back in the second half and took their first lead of the game, 45-44 at the 10:55 mark on a layup by Adol Aluong. The Huskies answered with a 13-2 run that included seven points from Cruz to take a 58-47 lead with six and a half minutes to play.
Derrell Williams gave the Wildcats a boost scoring eight points in a run, including a layup that tied the game at 66-66 with :42 seconds on the clock.
After each team committed a turnover and three timeouts later, Cruz nailed the game winning three-point basket with :09 seconds on the clock and Rothstein went to the free throw line with 1.5 seconds left to give the Huskies the win.
