#7/9 SCSU Men's Hockey to Host Michigan Tech on Mar. 1-2

The #7/9 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (19-12-1, 16-7-1 WCHA) will host Michigan Tech University (10-16-4, 6-14-4 WCHA) on March 1-2 at the National Hockey and Event Center (5,371 cap./200x100) in St. Cloud, Minn. The game on Mar. 1 is scheduled to start at 7:37 p.m. and the game on Mar. 2 is schedule to start at 7:07 p.m.

THROWBACK JERSEY NIGHT: March 2 will be a special night for Husky hockey fans. For starters, the Huskies will be saluting its 2012-13 senior class as these players skate at the NHEC for the final time in regular season play. SCSU will also be wearing special throwback jerseys that reflect the sweaters worn by the Huskies in the 1930s and 1940s. A silent auction will be held during the game and fans will have an opportunity to bid on the jerseys that will be presented to the auction winners after the finish of the game. SPLIT IN THE MOUNTAINS: SCSU split a weekend series at Colorado College with a 4-3 loss on Feb. 22 and a 5-2 win on Feb. 23. The split llowed the Huskies to maintain their hold on first place in the WCHA with a 16-7-1 league record (32 points). This is already the most league points amassed by the Huskies in a season since 2009-10, when the Huskies placed third in league play with 35 points. Overall, the Huskies own a 19-12-1 record.
NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT: SCSU Hobey Baker candidate Drew LeBlanc was the subject of a feature story in the New York Times on Feb. 24. At CC, LeBlanc had two assists and he tied the team record for career games played at 161 (Ryan Lasch also played in 161 games from 2006-10). LeBlanc also became just the 4th player in team history to hit 100 career assists. He also ranks eighth in career scoring at SCSU with 139 points (39g/100a)...For a season, LeBlanc becomes just the 11th player in team history to hit the 30-assist plateau in a season. He leads the nation this year with 32 assists and ranks 5th with 42 points.
WISE GUYS: The Huskies hit a new team-high by having 10 players selected as WCHA Sc holar-Athletes for 2013. Hobey Baker candidate Drew LeBlanc became just the fifth player in league history to earn Scholar-Athlete honors for the fourth time. The list of Huskies named to the Scholar-Athlete list this season includes: Brooks Bertsch, Nic Dowd, Ryan Faragher, Kevin Gravel, Joey Holka, Nick Jensen, Drew LeBlanc, David Morley, Nick Oliver and Jospeh Phillippi.
SENIOR SALUTE: SCSU will honor its three seniors on Mar. 2 during a pre-game ceremony. Those Huskies playing their final regular season games at the NHEC this weekend include Ben Hanowski, Taylor Johnson and Drew LeBlanc. This group has helped SCSU win 75 games, earn two trips to the WCHA Final Five and also gain an NCAA tournament bid in 2010.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Jonny Brodzinski added three goals and an assist during his first trip to CC. For his work, Brodzinski was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week. Brodzinski leads the Huskies with 17 goals this season and ranks first among Division I freshmen with 17 goals. He has charted a point for the Huskies in 16 of the last 17 games this season and also has 10 assists for the Huskies in 2012-13. His father Mike Brodzinski was a two-time All-American for the Huskies in 1985-86 and 1986-87. Of note, the SCSU record for most goals posted by a first-year player is 22 by Mark Hartigan in 1999-00. In 2006-07, SCSU rookie Andreas Nodl scored 18 goals during the season he was named the DI Rookie of the Year.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sophomore defender Andrew Prochno posted three assists in the Huskies' 5-2 win over CC on Feb. 23. He also notched an assist for SCSU on Feb. 22. On the season, Prochno has 17 assists and 20 points. For his effort at CC, Prochno gained the league's Defensive Player of the Week honor on Feb. 27.
DEFENSE POWER: Junior defender Nick Jensen continues to be a force on the blueline for the Huskies in 2012-13. An All-WCHA award winner in 2012, Jensen posted a pair of helpers at CC to push his season totals to three goals and 22 assists. He ranks second among all DI defensemen with 22 assists this season and his career total of 66 assists ranks second in the team records behind Kelly Hultgren, who had 79 assists from 1991-95. He leads the Huskies with a six-game point streak heading into the weekend of March 1-2.
HUSKY NOTES AND NEWS: SCSU sophomore netminder Ryan Faragher ranks fourth among DI goalies this winter with 18 victories in the nets for the Huskies. His season record now stands at 18-10-1 with a 2.25 goals against average and a .915 save rate. Faragher has 699 saves this season in 1734:01 minutes of play. In two years at SCSU, Faragher already ranks ninth in the team's career record with 27 goalie victories. He also ranks ninth in the team career records with 1,384 saves...The Huskies rank fifth in the nation this week with a scoring rate of 3.34 points per game. SCSU still ranks last in the nation among DI teams with an average of 8.5 penalty minutes per game...In the Huskies last 10 games, SCSU has outscored its opponents 37-20. Goalie Ryan Faragher is 7-2-1 during this 10-game run with a 2.01 goals against average and a .928 save rate. In those 10 games, Jonny Brodzinski has notched eight goals and four assists and Drew LeBlanc has four goals and eight assists for the Huskies....Jonny Brodzinski leads the Huskies this season with an amazing +25 on the plus/minus.
