SCSU Men's Hockey to Open WCHA Playoffs vs. UAA on Mar. 15-17

The #8 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (21-14-1, 18-9-1 WCHA) will host first round action in the WCHA playoffs on Friday, March 15 thru Sunday, March 17. The #1 seed Huskies will host #12 seed Alaska Anchorage (4-23-7, 2-20-6 WCHA) at the NHEC (5,371 cap./200x100). This best of three series will begin at 7:37 p.m. on March 15. The game on March 16 is slated for 7:07 p.m. and (if needed) the game on March 17 will be played at 7:07 p.m. The winner of this series will advance to play in the WCHA Final Five on March 21-23 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

The Huskies captured first place in the WCHA regular season standings with their win at UW on March 8. The MacNaughton Cup is scheduled to be on display in the south concourse of the NHEC during the first two periods of the game on March 16. Fans will have an opportunity to see the cup and take photos with it during this time. A post-game trophy presentation to the team is scheduled for after the final game of the series this weekend. WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS: SCSU claimed its first MacNaughton Cup title thanks to a 4-2 win at Wisconsin on Mar. 8 in a weekend series played at the old Dane County Coliseum. SCSU lost a 3-2 decision on Mar. 9 to end the series. In the victory, Nick Jensen posted the game winner, while Jonny Brodzinski added two goals in the win. Drew LeBlanc charted his nation leading 34th assist in the game and also knocked in an ENG late to make it 4-2 to cap a three goal third period that erased a one-goal Husky deficit heading into the final period of play. Ryan Faragher made 26 saves in the game for SCSU. On Mar. 9, Andrew Prochno carded two goals for SCSU that gave him four points on the weekend with 2g/2a. Cory Thorson also had two helpers in the game for SCSU...the victory provided the Huskies with an 18-9-1 league record and 37 WCHA points. SCSU is the regular season co-champ this year along with Minnesota. This marked the 5th time since 1951-52 that the WCHA had co-champs and the first since CC and Denver shared the title in 2004-05.
NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT: SCSU Hobey Baker candidate Drew LeBlanc owns the team record for career games played at 165, as he moves past Ryan Lasch, who had played in 161 games from 2006-10. He also moves into 6th place in career scoring at SCSU with 143 points (41g/102a) ahead of Joe Motzko's 142 from 1999-03. LeBlanc's 102 assists rank third in the team records behind Garrett Roe (113) and Lasch (104)...For a season, LeBlanc becomes just the 11th player in team history to hit the 30-assist plateau in a season. He leads the nation this year with 34 assists and ranks 4th with 46 points. He is just four assists away from the SCSU record of 38 assists set by Mark Hartigan in 2001-02 and Brandon Sampair on 2000-01... In the WCHA, LeBlanc finished the regular season with a league-leading 25 assists (WCHA games only). LeBlanc has 14 multi-point games in 2012-13.
WISE GUYS: The Huskies hit a new team-high by having 10 players selected as WCHA Sc holar-Athletes for 2013. HOT HAND: Defender Andrew Prochno continues to impress in the second half of 2012-13. He scored two assists and two goals in the series at Wisconsin. In the last six games, Prochno has enjoyed five multi-point games and has scored three goals and eight assists. His season totals now stand at five goals and 21 assists in 2012-13.
BLUELINE POWER: Junior defender Nick Jensen ranks second in the nation among DI defenders with 24 assists this season and he also four goals for a season total of 28 points. Jensen had one goal and one assist in the games at UW this past weekend. In his career, Jensen now ranks fourth in the team records for points by a defender with 83 (he is tied with SCSU assistant coach Garrett Raboin/2006-10). He ranks second in the team records for blueliners with 68 career assists.
HUSKY NOTES AND NEWS: A total of 12 Huskies have charted 10-or-more points in 2012-13. This group includes five freshmen and only two seniors. Of note, freshman Jimmy Murray notched two assists in the Husky win at Madison on March 8 and junior Cory Thorson had two helpers on March 9 at UW...Nic Dowd ranks second on the team on offense with 36 points (13g/23a)...goalie Ryan Faragher owns a 2.34 goals against average this season with a .914 save rate. His record this season is 20-12-1 and his 20 wins rank fourth in the team season records for most wins in a season. The team record for most goalie wins in a season is 25, which was set by Scott Meyer in 2000-01...Faragher has started 15 consecutive games for the Huskies. He is 9-5-1 in those games for the Huskies...SCSU has outscored its opponents 119-91 this season and have outshot its opponents 1060-965.
