Huskies to Open Play in WCHA FInal Five on March 22

WCHA FINAL FIVE: The #7 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (23-14-1, 18-9-1 WCHA) will be the #1 seed at the 2013 WCHA Final Five on March 21-23 at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul, Minn. The Huskies will open play at 2:07 p.m. on Friday, March 22 with a semifinal game against the winner of the Minnesota State/Wisconsin game...the Final Five will open at the X on March 22 with a 2:07 p.m. quarterfinal game between MSU and Wisconsin. The 7:07 p.m. quarterfinal game will feature North Dakota and Colorado College. The two winners will advance to the semi's on Friday, March 22. SCSU will play the 2:07 p.m. game and Minnesota will play the UND/CC winner at 7:07 p.m. on March 22. The WCHA Final Five championship game will be played at 7:07 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the Xcel Energy Center.

THE CHAMPS: The Huskies claimed their first WCHA regular season title in 2012-13 with an 18-9-1 league record. SCSU joined the league in 1990-91 and also won the WCHA FInal Five title in 2001.

ON THE ROAD TO ST. PAUL: The St. Cloud State University men' hockey team (23-14-1, 18-9-1 WCHA) punched its ticket to St. Paul with a two-game sweep of Alaska Anchorage in first round action of the 2013 WCHA playoffs on March 15-16. The Huskies opened action at the National Hockey and Event Center on March 15 with a big 6-1 win over the Seawolves and then battled to a 5-1 win on March 16 to clinch the #1 seed at the upcoming WCHA Final Five.
FINAL FIVE FACTS: This marks the Huskies' 14th trip to the WCHA Final Five since joining the league in 1990-91. This marks SCSU's second consecutive trip to the WCHA Final Five and it is the sixth time during the Bob Motzko era at SCSU that the Huskies have earned a trip to the Final Five. Under the leadership of Coach Motzko, the Huskies have advanced to the Final Five in 2012, 2010, 2008, 2007 and 2006... SCSU is 8-16-0 in games played at the Final Five since its first trip in 1994. SCSU won the Broadmoor Trophy in 2001 with an epic 6-5 OT win over North Dakota. Over the years, SCSU has advanced to the Final Five championship game four times and three of those title bouts were against North Dakota... The Huskies are 39-40 in WCHA postseason since (First Round and Final Five games combined) since joining the league in 1990-91. In first round games, SCSU has gained a 31-24 record and SCSU is 22-6 in WCHA First Round games played in St. Cloud.
IN THE OPENER: SCSU will open play in the Final Five on Friday, March 22 with a 2:07 p.m. drop against the winner of the Minnesota State/Wisconsin quarterfinal game. SCSU has never played Minnesota State in the Final Five and the Huskies are 2-1 in Final Five games played against Wisconsin... WCHA playoff action, the Huskies are 2-1 in games played against Minnesota State and they are 7-3 in games played against Wisconsin since SCSU joined the league... In games played at the Xcel Energy Center, the Huskies are 6-10 since it opened in 2000-01.
THE LeBLANC LEGACY: SCSU senior Hobey Baker Award and postseason awards candidate Drew LeBlanc scored one goal and three assists in the Huskies' sweep of UAA. LeBlanc now has 50 points this season, which makes him the ninth player in team history to hit the 50-point plateau in a season at SCSU. LeBlanc leads the nation with 37 assists this winter and he currently ranks third in the country with 50 points. In his storied career, LeBlanc has 105 assists and 42 goals. He has played in a school record 167 games as a Husky and he ranks second in the team record with 105 assists and sixth with 147 points...LeBlanc is the first WCHA player to earn both the league's Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year award in the same season. The last time a Husky earned the league's Player of the Year award was Mark Hartigan in 2002 and the last time a Husky was named Student-Athlete of the Year was Kyle McLaughlin in 1999.
GREAT GOALIE: Sophomore goalie Ryan Faragher improved his season numbers to 22-12-1 with his wins over UAA on March 15-16. Faragher needs three more wins this season to tie the team record of 25 goalie wins set by Scott Meyer in 2000-01. Faragher owns a 2.27 GAA and a .916 save rate this season.
THE ROOKIES: Freshman forward Jonny Brodzinski posted two goals in the Huskies' 6-1 win over UAA on March 15. Brodzinski leads all DI rookies in 2012-13 with 21 goals (along with leading SCSU in goals scored this winter)...In the Huskies' 6-1 win over UAA, Husky freshmen accounted for five goals and five assists. In the game, SCSU rookies David Morley and Joey Benik both had one goal and two assists apiece. Morley notched the game winner for the Huskies in both games of the WCHA playoff series. Morley also leads the Huskies this season with seven power play goals (11th in the nation).
NCAA LEADERS: SCSU is the least penalized team in the country in 2012-13. The Huskies are averaging a low 8.1 penalty minutes per game in 2012-13...SCSU scored 11 goals in the series against UAA. The big offensive numbers helped the Huskies moved up to third in the nation with a goals per game average of 3.42.
AWARD WINNER: Junior Nick Jensen was selected as the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year. He is the first SCSU player to gain Defensive Player of the Year notice. Jensen ranks second among DI defensemen with 25 assists this season. Of note, the SCSU record for most points by a defenseman was set by Bret Hedican in 1990-91 at 30 assists...In his career, Jensen has 84 points and 69 assists. Jensen ranks fourth in the team records for a blueliner with 84 points and second with 69 assists.

LeBlanc has scored three-or-more points in a game four times in 2012-13.
WISE GUYS: The Huskies hit a new team-high by having 10 players selected as WCHA Sc holar-Athletes for 2013. Hobey Baker candidate Drew LeBlanc became just the fifth player in league history to earn Scholar-Athlete honors for the fourth time. The list of Huskies named to the Scholar-Athlete list this season includes: Brooks Bertsch, Nic Dowd, Ryan Faragher, Kevin Gravel, Joey Holka, Nick Jensen, Drew LeBlanc, David Morley, Nick Oliver and Jospeh Phillippi... The Huskies also tied a team record by putting 16 players on the 2013 All-WCHA Academic team.

On Mar. 15, David Morley scored the GWG at 15:08 of the first period, while SCSU freshman Jonny Brodzinski had two goals. Jimmy Murray and Garrett Milan added SCSU's other goals. Ryan Faragher posted 19 saves in the contest to earn the win...on March 16, Morley posted his second GWG of the weekend with a marker at 4:56 of the third period. THE CEREMONY: SCSU clinched its first-ever WCHA regular season title on March 8 with its win at Wisconsin. The Huskies celebrated at the NHEC on March 16 with a post-game MacNaughton Cup presentation by WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod.
