Pittsburgh, Pa., -- Drew LeBlanc has added another chapter to his historic story of success by becoming the first player in the history of St. Cloud State University to receive the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, which is presented annual to the nation's outstanding Division I men's college hockey player.
The award was announced on Friday, April 11 at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. as part of the 2013 NCAA Division I Frozen Four men's hockey. The other two finalists for the 2013 Hobey Baker Award were sophomore forward Johnny Gaudreau of Boston College and Eric Hartzell of Quinnipiac.
This marks the 33rd time the award has been presented by The Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation.
The three finalists were selected from the initial list of Top Ten candidates by the 23-member Selection Committee and an additional round of online fan balloting to determine this year's Hobey Baker winner. Criteria for the award includes: displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game, strength of character on and off the ice, sportsmanship and scholastic achievements.
Coming off a redshirt season after severely breaking his leg last year, LeBlanc has proved to be a masterful playmaker. A two-year team captain, LeBlanc helped guide the Huskies to their first ever Frozen.
He finished the year leading the nation in assists (37) and is seventh in points (50), just three points from the top. LeBlanc scored 13 goals including three on the power play and three that proved to be game winners in the 42 games he played in 2012-13.
Named First Team all-conference, LeBlanc attained a first in the 52 year history of the WCHA, being named both the Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year and the Player of the Year.
Earlier in the day at the Frozen Four, LeBlanc was named to the CCM Division I Men's Hockey All-American squad as a First Team West selection at forward.
A four-time All-Academic student and WCHA Scholar Athlete, student taught all season to complete his requirements for his Math Education major. LeBlanc finds time assisting with new student move-ins, helps out at hockey clinics and the Skate with the Huskies events.
In addition to the Huskies' Frozen Four appearance, LeBlanc helped his team win its first-ever NCAA regional championship in 2013 and he also helped SCSU gain its first-ever WCHA regular season championship.
LeBlanc is the son of Guy and Paula LeBlanc of Hermantown, Minn.
