SCSU Men's Hockey Headed to the Frozen Four

THE FROZEN FOUR - April 11 & 13 - Pittsburgh, Penn.
The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (25-15-1, 18-9-1 WCHA) will play in the NCAA Frozen Four on April 11 and April 13 at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Huskies will open the Frozen Four on April 11 with a match against Quinnipiac (29-7-5, 17-2-3 ECAC) at 7 p.m. (CT). In the early game at 3:30 p.m. (CT) on April 11, Yale (20-12-3, 12-9-1 ECAC) will play UMass Lowell (28-10-2, 16-9-2 HE). The two winners will advance to the championship game of the Frozen Four at the Consol Energy Center at 6 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, April 13 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

THE CHAMPS: The Huskies claimed their first WCHA regular season title in 2012-13 with an 18-9-1 league record. SCSU joined the league in 1990-91 and also won the WCHA FInal Five title in 2001.

HUSKY HOBEY HAT TRICK:
St. Cloud State University senior Drew LeBlanc was named as a top 3 Hobey Baker Award finalist for 2013. He is the fourth SCSU player to be named as a Hobey Baker Award top 10 finalist and SCSU's second Hobey Top 3 finalist. He currently leads the nation with 37 assists and is seventh in the nation with 50 points this season, which makes him the ninth player in team history to hit the 50-point plateau in a season at SCSU. In his storied career, LeBlanc has 105 assists and 42 goals. He has played in a school record 169 games as a Husky and he ranks second in the team records with 105 assists and sixth with 147 points...LeBlanc is the first WCHA player to earn both the league's Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year award in the same season. The last time a Husky earned the league's Player of the Year award was Mark Hartigan in 2002 and the last time a Husky was named Student-Athlete of the Year was Kyle McLaughlin in 1999. SCSU's other Hobey top 10 finalists were Mark Hartigan (2002 - top 3), Bobby Goepfert (2007) and Ryan Lasch (2008).
STOP FORCE: SCSU head coach Bob Motzko has been named as one of the finalists for the 2012-13 AHCA Men's Ice Hockey
Spencer Penrose Award Finalists flexxCOACH/AHCA Division I Coach of the Year. The award winner will be announced on April 10 in Pittsburgh. Motzko is in his 8th season at SCSU with a 162-124-35 career record. He has earned 4 NCAA bids and won the 2013 WCHA Regular Season title and the 2013 NCAA DI Midwest Regional crown.
STOP FORCE: Sophomore goalie Ryan Faragher owns a 24-13-1 record this season. Faragher needs three more wins this season to tie the team record of 25 goalie wins set by Scott Meyer in 2000-01. Faragher owns a 2.22 GAA and a .914 save rate this season. Faragher was named to the All-Regional Tournament team for his performance in Toledo that featured just two goals allowed.
YOUNG GUNS: Freshman forward Jonny Brodzinski leads all DI rookies in 2012-13 with 22 goals (along with leading SCSU in goals scored this winter)...SCSU's freshmen class has been impressive this season with 55 goals and 61 assists. Among DI rookie scoring leaders this winter, Kalle Kossila ranks 13th with .85 points per game and Brodzinski ranks 14th with .80 ppg. Rookie David Morley ranks 13th among all DI players with seven power play goals this season. Brodzinski was also named the 2013 All-CHN Rookie team in 2013.
REGIONAL MVP: Joey Benik was named the Regional MVP after charting 4 goals and one assist in the tournament, which included two game winners. An injury scratch after being hurt in the first day of practice for the first half of the season, Benik has charted 7 goals and 4 assists in 23 games played this winter. He helped lead Penticton to a Canadian Junior title in 2012. He was joined on the All-Region team by Andrew Prochno, Cory Thorson and Ryan Faragher.
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS: SCSU claimed its first MacNaughton Cup title thanks to a 4-2 win at Wisconsin on Mar. 8 in a weekend series played at the old Dane County Coliseum...the victory provided the Huskies with an 18-9-1 league record and 37 WCHA points. SCSU is the regular season co-champ this year along with Minnesota. This marked the 5th time since 1951-52 that the WCHA had co-champs and the first since CC and Denver shared the title in 2004-05.
HOLY TOLEDO: The Huskies earned their first-ever NCAA Regional title with a first place ending at the Midwest Regional on March 30-31 in Toledo, Ohio. The Huskies were the #4 seed at the Regional and defeated top seed Notre Dame (5-1) and #2 seed Miami (4-1) to punch their ticket to Pittsburgh. This marks SCSU's ninth NCAA bid and first trip to the Frozen Four.
HUSKY NOTES AND NEWS: SCSU has nine players with 20-or-more points in 2012-13...Jonny Brodzinski leads the Huskies with an impressive +27 on the plus/minus...Andrew Prochno (48) and Nic Dowd (46) pace the Huskies with blocks this season...Drew LeBlanc hit his 15th multi-point night of the season with his goal and two assists on March 16. LeBlanc has scored three-or-more points in a game four times in 2012-13.
AWARD WINNER: Junior Nick Jensen was selected as the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year. He is the first SCSU player to gain Defensive Player of the Year notice. He was also picked as a All-CHN First Team choice on defense for 2013. Jensen ranks second among DI defensemen with 27 assists this season. Of note, the SCSU record for most points by a defenseman was set by Bret Hedican in 1990-91 at 30 assists...Jensen ranks fourth in the team records for a blueliner with 86 points and second with 71 assists.
WISE GUYS: The Huskies hit a new team-high by having 10 players selected as WCHA Sc holar-Athletes for 2013. Hobey Baker candidate Drew LeBlanc became just the fifth player in league history to earn Scholar-Athlete honors for the fourth time. The list of Huskies named to the Scholar-Athlete list this season includes: Brooks Bertsch, Nic Dowd, Ryan Faragher, Kevin Gravel, Joey Holka, Nick Jensen, Drew LeBlanc, David Morley, Nick Oliver and Jospeh Phillippi... The Huskies also tied a team record by putting 16 players on the 2013 All-WCHA Academic team.
SCSU HOCKEY 101: The Huskies began playing organized hockey in 1931-32. In 1986-87, SCSU placed 3rd at the NCAA DIII tournament under the direction of head coach Herb Brooks, who served for just one season as SCSU's head coach. He helped SCSU make the move to the DI level, which took place in 1987-88. Craig Dahl was SCSU's head coach from 1987 to 2005, and Bob Motzko has been the Huskies' head coach since 2005-06.
