#9 Huskies on the road to #2 Union College

The #9 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (1-1-0, 0-0-0-0 NCHC) will travel to defending national champion #2 Union College (4-0-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) on Oct. 24 and Oct. 25 with 6 p.m. (CT) starts on both nights. The games will be played at Union's Frank L. Messa Rink at Achilles Center (2,225 cap./201x86) in Schenectady, NY. Fans can watch the games live on the Union College web stream at  www.unionathletics.tv

NCHC CHAMPIONS: St. Cloud State University captured the inaugural regular season championship of the NCHC in 2013-14. The Huskies finished the year with a first place mark of 15-6-3-0 in the always rugged NCHC. SCSU posted 48 league points to win the Penrose Trophy, while North Dakota trailed in second place with 45 points. This marked the second consecutive season that SCSU has won a regular season conference title. In 2013, the Huskies won the WCHA regular season championshp. These are the first two regular season league titles claimed by the Huskies since they moved to the NCAA DI level in 1987-88.

ON THE AIR: KCML Lite 99.9 FM will broadcast all home and away SCSU men's hockey games during the 2014-15 season. Fans can tune into KCML on the web at www.lite999.com. Dan Terhaar, the Voice of the Huskies, and Dave Reichel will provide the call for KCML in 2014-15.

COLGATE SPLIT:  The Huskies split its opening weekend series against #5/6 Colgate with a 3-1 loss on Oct. 10 and a 3-1 win on Oct. 11 at the Brooks Center. Joey Benik tallied the first Huskies' goal of the season with a power play marker in the loss, while Jonny Brodzinski replied on Oct. 11 with a hat trick in the 3-1 victory over Colgate. Brodzinski also had the first assist on Benik's goal, which provided him with #2 NCAA Star of the Week honors on Oct. 14. SCSU outhshot Colgate in the series 59-47, while sophomore goalie Charlie Lindgren earned both starts with 43 saves to his credit.
ON THE RISE: .Brodzinski's four points vs. Colgate pushes his career totals to 46 goals and 78 points in 82 games as a Husky. His hat trick vs. Colgate was the second of his career at SCSU. Brodzinski currently ranks 22nd in the team's DI record book with 46 career goals. Of note, his father Mike Brodzinski was a two-time All-American at SCSU and is the Huskies' all-time point leader during the Huskies' DII/III era with 146 points (76/70a) from 1984-87.
THE PROCHNO WATCH:  Senior defender Andrew Prochno enters the 2014-15 season with 76 career points and needs just 24 points to join the Huskies' 100-point club. He would be the first defenseman to join the club since Kelly Hultgren had 107 points from 1991-95.
BY THE NUMBERS:  SCSU will return 21 letterwinners from its 2013-14 squad. This group of returnees includes three goalies, six defenders and 12 forwards. SCSU lost six letterwinners from last year's squad, which includes one goalie, two defenders and four forwards. SCSU will return seven of its top 10 point producers from last year and it will also return four of its top five point producers from 2013-14.Â

CHALLENGE TIME: SCSU will get several early season tests in 2014-15. The Huskies opened with games against #5/6 Colgate and this week it will play #2 Union. On Oct. 31-Nov. 1, the Huskies will play #1 Minnesota followed by games against #19 Minnesota Duluth on Nov. 7-8. On Nov. 21-22, the Huskies will host #3 North Dakota and SCSU will finish its pre-Holiday schedule with games against Bemidji State and Omaha, both teams received votes in the latest national polls.
NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP:  Jonny Brodzinski led the Huskies with 41 points in 2013-14. He tallied 21 goals and 20 assists as a sophomore, which included two game winners and five power play goals. In two years at SCSU, Brodzinski had 43 goals, 31 assists and 74 points. Of note, Mark Hartigan owns the best two year start at SCSU with 49 goals (1999-01) and Jeff Saterdalen is tops at SCSU with 93 points in his first two seasons as a Husky from 1988-90.
NEWS & NOTES:  SCSU rookie Patrick Russell posted his first college point with an assist on Joey Benik's goal vs. Colgate on Oct. 10. He is a resident of Copenhagen, Denmark...the Huskies were ranked #9 in the latest men's hockey polls...the Huskies feature four players from Finland on this year's roster - Kalle Kossila, Rasmus Reijola, Nilkas Nevalainen and Mika Ilvonen...SCSU is 34-17-4 in games played vs. ECAC schools since making the move to the DI level in 1987-88.

ROAD WARRIORS:  The Huskies set a new team record in 2013-14 for most road wins in a season. SCSU charted 13 wins at away sites and two wins at neutral sites in 2013-14 for a total of 15 wins away from the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. SCSU was 7-6-5 in games played at home last year, 13-3-0 on the road and 2-2-0 at neutral sites. The previous road win record was 13 wins during the 2000-01 season.
