Johnnies slip past Huskies, 73-70 in men's basketball

Collegeville, Minn.—Saint John's University made five of eight free throw attempts in the final :36 seconds to hang on for a 73-70 non-conference win over St. Cloud State Tuesday night at Sexton Arena.
St. Cloud State is 2-2 overall and St. John's is 2-1 overall. The Huskies will host the University of Minnesota Duluth in the NSIC opener on Saturday at 4 p.m.
The Huskies took a 65-62 lead at the 2:27 mark of the second half on a James Fort layup. The Johnnies made back to back three-point baskets by Tarik Hujdurovic and Joe Risinger to take back the lead, 68-65. A pair of Alex Schmitt free throws gave the Johnnies a 70-66 lead with :36 seconds remaining
St. Cloud State had three players score in double figures led by Donnell Cegers with 16 points.
Huskies Tip-ins
The Huskies James Fort was seven of 11 from the field and pulled down a team high six rebounds. He also had two blocked shots.
Guard Jordan Poydras scored 11 points, dished out three assists and had two steals for the Huskies.
Kevin Levandoski finished the game with eight points and three assists.
The Huskies shot 41.2 percent from the field and made six of seven free throw attempts.
Johnnies Put Backs
Saint John's Mitchell Kuck led all scorers with 19 points.
SJU's Blake Maslonkowski posted a double double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. He was seven of nine from the free throw line.
The Johnnies shot 51 percent from the field for the game and made 16 of 19 free throws.
SJU held a slight rebounding edge, 34-32.
Saint John's led 34-32 at the half as the Huskies trailed by as many as five points in the first half.
