#5 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey Edges #10 UND, 3-1

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (19-8-5, 13-6-3-0 NCHC) regained a share of first place in the National College Hockey Conference with a big 3-1 win over #10 North Dakota (19-10-3, 14-8-0-0 NCHC) on Saturday, March 1 before a soldout crowd of 5,745 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory pushed SCSU's conference point total to 42, which moves them back into a tie for first place in the league with North Dakota. The victory also clinched home ice in the first round of the NCHC playoffs for the Huskies, which will begin with the best of three series on March 14-16 at the Brooks Center in St. Cloud. Next weekend, the Huskies will have a chance to win the regular season NCHC title when they travel to Colorado College for a two-game set on March 7-8. On the same weekend, North Dakota will host Western Michigan.
As the teams head into the final weekend of league play, Nebraska Omaha sits in third place with 39 points and is the only team along with UND that can now finish ahead of SCSU in the regular season standings. In the current Pairwise rankings (as of March 1), the Huskies were ranked fifth after the win over UND.
After a tough loss on Friday, Feb. 28 against North Dakota, the Huskies rallied offensively and defensively throughout the contest on March 1. A strong defensive effort helped the Huskies withstand a strong push by UND in the first period as they were outshot 14-8. The lone bump in the road for the Huskies in the first was a shorthanded goal by UND's Rocco Grimaldi at 14:17 of the opening period, which gave UND a brief 1-0 lead.
Just over a minute later, SCSU broke the ice with an even-strength goal by Joey Benik at 15:44 that made the tally 1-1. Assists on the play were provided by Kalle Kossila and Jonny Brodzinski. This was Benik's second goal of the weekend and his 10th of 2013-14. The assist was Brodzinski's 19th of the season and it was also his team-leading 35 point of the year. For Kossila, the assist was his 18th of the 2013-14 campaign and his 30th point.
In the second period, Cory Thorson provided the winning edge for the Huskies with a goal at 18:55 of the period. The solo assist on the play was credited to Tim Daly, who has now has charted four assists over his last five starts for the Huskies. The goal was Thorson's ninth of the season and it was his 19 point in 2013-14.
In the third period, SCSU continued to apply pressure throughout the period and outshot UND 14-9. The final result was completed with an empty net goal by senior Kevin Gravel at 19:51 of the third period, which made the final 3-1. The goal was Gravel's sixth of the season, which is a career season-high for the blueliner from Michigan.
In the nets, Ryan Farahger was impressive with 33 saves in the game. Faragher now owns a 17-7-4 record this season and the victory was also his 50th career win as a Husky - the second most career wins in the history of the program at SCSU.
Overall, UND outshot the Huskies 34-32 in the game. On the power play, SCSU was 0-of-5 and UND was 0-of-2.
