Huskies Lose OT Decision Against Miami, 5-4

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #4 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (21-9-5) lost a heartbreaking 5-4 decision in overtime against Miami University (13-19-3) on Friday, March 14, in the first round of NCHC playoffs at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, MInn.
The Huskies rallied in the closing minute of the game to tie the game when senior Kevin Gravel ignited the Brooks Center crowd with his goal at the :01 mark the third period. Gravel was assisted on the play by senior Nic Dowd and it also forced the OT session, which was ended on a goal by Miami's Riley Barber at 10:10 that included assists from Sean Kuraly and Matt Joyaux.
The evening opened at 2:40 of the first period with a goal by Miami's Kevin Morris, which included assists from Alex Wideman and John Doherty. The Huskies charged back into the contest with a goal by Tim Daly at 8:29 of the first period, which was assisted by Jimmy Murray and Daniel Tedesco.
The goal was Daly's second of the season and it was his eighth point of the 2013-14 campaign.
In the second period, Miami regained the lead with a shorthanded goal by Chris Joyaux at 4:07 that included assists from Kuraly and Barber.
The Huskies rallied to start the third period with Gravel's first goal of the night at :31, which included assists from Daly and David Morley. The Redhawks responded to Gravel's goal with a power play marker by Cody Murphy at 6:49 of the third period. Austin Czarnik and Justin Greenberg each provided assists on the goal by Murphy.
Dowd then tied the game again at 3-3 with his 20th goal of the 2013-14 season at 10:39 of the third period. Murray and Ethan Prow provided assists on the play, which was Dowd's 50th goal as a Husky.
Kuraly provided the Redhawks with another one goal edge as his goal at 11:06 of the third gave Miami a 4-3 lead. In the closing minute of play, SCSU pulled goalie Charlie Lindgren and then a late penalty by Miami set the stage for Gravel's last second heroics.
In the contest, SCSU was outshot by Miami 35-33 and each team had one power play goal (SCSU was 1-5 and Miami was 1-2). Ryan Faragher started the game for SCSU and played for 51:06 minutes and allowed four goals and made 23 saves. Lindgren finished the game for SCSU with seven saves and one goal allowed in the final 18:20 minutes of play. Ryan McKay was the goalie of record for MU with 29 saves.
The Huskies will continue its NCHC playoff series on Saturday, March 15 with a 7:07 p.m. game at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
