St. Cloud State rolls to 7-0 victory over Western Michigan

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (10-12-1, 5-7-1 NCHC) issued a convincing statement on Friday, Jan. 23 thanks to its 7-0 victory over Western Michigan University (10-10-3, 3-7-3 NCHC) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. The victory snapped a two-game losing skid for the Huskies and it also extended the Huskies' home win streak to three games.
The victory marked SCSU's first shutout of the season as the Huskies' goalie Charlie Lindgren turned aside 23 shots to gained his second career shutout in the game. The seven goals was also the most goals posted by the Huskies in a game this season.
The scoring started at 12:50 of the first period with an unassisted marker by Brooks Bertsch, which was his third goal of the 2014-15 season. SCSU stretched its lead to 2-0 with a goal by David Morley at 14:30 of the first period with assists from Joey Benik and Niklas Nevalainen.
The goals continued in the second period with Joe Rehkamp posting his fourth marker of the season at 4:10 of the period with an assist from Jonny Brodzinski. Rehkamp has now scored four goals in his last five outings for the Huskies.
Patrick Russell made it 4-0 with his power play goal at 18:50 of the second period. Benik and Kalle Kossila each had assists on the play, which was Russell's fifth goal of the season.
Brodzinski posted his 96th career point at 19:57 of the second period as he scored his 13th goal of the season with a solo assist from Rehkamp on the play that made it 5-0 to cap the second.
In the final period, SCSU iced the game with Kossila's power play marker at 10:14 (assists by Russell and Benik) along with the final goal of the game scored at 15:08 of the third period by Morley. Benik gained his fourth assist of the game on the play and Russell added an assist to make his game total one goal and two assists.
On the night, SCSU outshot the Broncos 30-23 in the contest. Lukas Hafner started the game for WMU and allowed two goals before being replaced by Frank Slubowski, who allowed five goals and made 17 saves. On the power play, SCSU was 2-6 and WMU was 0-3.
