The #13/14 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (6-2-0, 2-0-0 NCHC) earned its second series sweep of the 2015-16 season thanks to a 3-1 victory over #14/15 Miami University (3-4-1, 0-2-0 NCHC) on Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory followed a 3-0 win for the Huskies on Friday, Oct. 30 against Miami and it marked the second consecutive series sweep for the Huskies at home against the Redhawks. Last season, SCSU gained a pair of wins over Miami here at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Nathan WidmanMiami broke into the scoring column at 12:05 of the first period with a goal by Jack Roslovic. He was assisted on the play by Matthew Caito and Zach LaValle. The goal would prove to be the extent of MU's offense on the night as SCSU netminder Charlie Lindgren played shutout hockey for the remainder of the evening with a total of 33 saves to his credit.
In the second period, SCSU's offense came alive with a goal by rookie forward Mikey Eyssimont at 3:49. The unassisted marker was Eyssimont's first collegiate goal.
Sophomore forward Patrick Russell charted the game winning goal for SCSU with his third goal of the year at 16:05 of the second period. The goal was unassisted and it also moved Russell's season point total to seven, which ranks second on the team for the Huskies.
The Huskies capped the evening's offense at 19:02 of the second period with a goal by senior Kalle Kossila. He was assisted on the play by Will Borgen and Nathan Widman. The goal was Kossila's second of 2015-16 and it pushed his team-leading point total to eight. Of note, the assist moved Widman into a tie for first on the team's assist list this season with six. Kossila also has six helpers this winter.
In the game, Miami outshot the Huskies 34-25. Both teams were 0-2 on the power play as Lindgren had 13 saves apiece in the first and second periods of the game. Jay Williams was the goalie of record for Miami with 22 saves.
The Huskies will enjoy a bye week on Nov. 6-7 before returning to NCHC action on Nov. 13-14 with a pair of league games at Western Michigan University. Fans can listen to both of these games on KCML FM 99.9 (www.lite999.com) with Dan Terhaar on the call from Kalamazoo, Mich.
