St. Cloud, Minn. --- The St. Cloud State Huskies (3-7-1, 1-7-1 WCHA) returned to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center after a week off looking for a win against the Minnesota State Mavericks (2-10-1, 0-9-0 WCHA) and succeeded in game one with a 4-1 score.

"We really wanted to bear down on the off week and come Monday the girls came ready to work and we really had a great week of practice. We showed up tonight with a different attitude looking to win a game and I was really happy that we stuck to our game plan and came out with the win."

The Huskies controlled the first period and outshot the Mavericks 13-3 but came out of the period scoreless.

They continued their momentum in the second period, matching their first period shots on goal. Freshman forward, Julia Tylke, was first to find the back of the net when she sent one past Maverick goaltender to take the lead 1-0. Defensemen, Brittney Anderson and Christa Moody add to their offensive success with the assists. The Huskies ended the period on a high note when junior forward, Kelsey Saelens, scored her first goal of the season with 22 seconds remaining on the clock. Line mates, Vanessa Spataro and Hannah Potrykus were awarded the assist.

St. Cloud fought for more goals in the third period and found success with a goal from Molly Illikainen, who has stepped up as an offensive force for the Huskies.

"I've had it in my head to make sure I was getting up ice and get into the rush. We've been working in practice on driving the net and that's the first thing that enters my mind when we enter the zone and it's been working out for me," Illikainen.

Brittney Anderson added to her earlier helper, along with Mackenzie Johnson, on Illikainen's goal. With just minutes to play, Tylke sent a shot to the corner and buried her second goal of the game and fourth goal for the Huskies.

"It wouldn't have happened without this team and all working together. There are times when an individual effort doesn't work out but everyone was in it together and contributed to my success tonight," Tylke.

Illikainen found her second point of the game off Tylke's goal, and Alyssa Erickson tallied her fourth season assist.

MSU closed out the game with a power play goal with just under three minutes left to play.

Both goaltenders were busy between the pipes as SCSU's, Katie Fitzgerald, stopped 23 of 24 shots she was face with and MSU's, Brianna Quade, faced 35 from the Huskies.

The series continues Nov. 14 at 3:07 pm. All youth (grades 12 and under) will be admitted FREE to all regular season SCSU women's hockey games this winter. SCSU students with a valid SCSU student ID card will also be admitted to all regular season St. Cloud State women's hockey home games in 2015-16.
