#18 St. Cloud State to face UND at the Frozen Faceoff

MARCH MADNESS: The #18 St. Cloud State University Huskies men's hockey team (18-17-1, 11-12-1-0 NCHC) will open play in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff on Mar. 20, at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis, Minn.  The action will get underway on at 4:08 p.m. (CT).  In the other semifinal game of the Frozen Faceoff, Miami will face Denver at 7:38 p.m. on Mar. 20. the Frozen Faceoff will continue on Saturday, March 21 with the third place game at 3:38 p.m. and the championship game at 7:38 p.m.  Fans can listen to all games on KCML FM 99.9 (www.lite999.com) and on KVSC FM 88.1 (www.kvsc.org).  Fans can watch the game live on the CBS Sports Network (check your local listings).  Fans can watch the game live on the web at www.NCHC.tv/scsu

ADVANCEMENT:  SCSU has advanced to the 2015 NCHC Frozen Faceoff.  The Huskies punched their ticket to Minneapolis with a weekend sweep at #7 Omaha.  On March 13, the Huskies scored a 2-1 double OT victory against the Mavericks that ended with a goal by David Morley at 9:49 of the second OT session.  SCSU wrapped it up with a 3-1 win over the Mavericks on March 14.Â
ON TARGET:  This will mark SCSU's first trip to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff.  The Huskies will square off against #1 seed North Dakota at 4:08 p.m. on Friday, March 20.  The game will be played at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis.  The last time SCSU played a game in the Target Center, the Huskies split games in the WCHA Final Five.  On March 17, 2000, SCSU charted a 7-3 loss to North Dakota and then returned on March 18, 2000 with a 6-4 win over Minnesota in the Final Five's third place game.  Of note, SCSU is 1-2-1 in games played at the Target Center.
PLAYOFF POINTS:  In action at the conference finals, SCSU owns an 8-17 record.  The Huskies won the WCHA Final Five title in 2001 with a 6-5 OT victory over North Dakota on March 17, 2001 at the Xcel Energy Center.  This marked the lone conference tournament championship for the Huskies.  SCSU also advanced to the championship game of the WCHA Final Five in 1994, 2006 and 2010.  The Huskies lost to North Dakota in the WCHA Final Five championship game in 2010 and 2006.  SCSU is 1-6 in action against North Dakota in the conference final rounds... In all-time conference playoff action (first round and conference finals included), the Huskies own a 41-40 overall record dating back to 1991.

HUSKIES VS. UND:   SCSU is 2-3-0 in play against UND in the last five games of the series, and the Huskies are 5-4-1 in the play against UND in the last 10 games of this series...In 2014-15, the Huskies charted a 3-1 win over UND at home on Nov. 21, 2014.  The following evening UND posted a 3-1 win at SCSU on Nov. 22, 2014.  At UND, the Huskies lost by scores of 3-2 and 3-1 on Feb. 27-28, 2015...In the all-time series against North Dakota, the Huskies own a 37-64-12 record, which dates back to an 8-1 win by the Huskies on Jan. 6, 1947... In the last conference playoff game between these two teams, the Huskies lost a 4-1 match on March 15, 2012 in the WCHA Final Five play-in game.
NCAA LEADERS:Â Â Â SCSU's Jonny Brodzinski leads the nation with 10 power play goals this season...SCSU is the fifth least penalized team in the nation this season with an average of 8.9 penalty minutes per game...The Huskies power play is ranked fifth in the nation at 24.1 percent (35/145).
TEAM LEADERS:  SCSU juniors Jonny Brodzinski (19g/16a) and Joey Benik (14g/21) lead the Huskies this winter with 35 points apiece.  Benik issued one goal and two assists during the Huskies' sweep of Omaha, while junior David Morley had three goals in at Omaha.  Of note, Brodzinski paces SCSU with 19 goals this season and Morley ranks second with 16 goals (a career season-high for Morley).  Benik tops the team with 21 assists, which is a career season-high for the winger from Andover, Minn.  Junior Kalle Kossila has 20 assists this winter for the Huskies.Â
KALLE COUNTDOWN:  Kossila needs two more points to join the Huskies' 100-point club.  In 114 career games, Kossila has 33 goals and 65 assists for 98 points at SCSU.  Earlier this season, Brodzinski joined the 100-point club and now ranks 21st in the team records with 109 points.
GREAT GOALIE:  Sophomore goalie Charlie Lindgren owns a 17-16-1 record this season for the Huskies.  He has a 2.27 goals against average and a .920 save rate with 862 saves to his credit.  Lindgren's season GAA ranks sixth in the team records, while his save rate ranks seventh in the team records.  His current save total ranks 12th in the team records behind Scott Meyer, who had 869 saves in 1999-00.  Of note, Jase Weslosky owns the team records for best GAA in a season at 2.11 in 2007-08 and best save rate at .931 in 2007-08.
200 WINS:  Earlier this season, SCSU coach Bob Motzko became just the second coach in team history to gain his 200th career victory.  In 10 seasons with the Huskies, Motzko has 202 career wins to his credit.  The all-time win leader is Craig Dahl, who had 338 wins from 1987-2005.
HOT HANDS:Â Joey Benik has posted two goals and three assists during the last three games for the Huskies, while David Morley has charted four goals during those three games.
SAVE THE DAY:  Charlie Lindgren had 45 saves in the OT win against Omaha on March 13.  This sets a new career game-high for saves for Lindgren.  His previous career game-high was 37 saves in a 3-1 win against Miami on Jan. 9, 2015.  Lindgren has averaged 38.3 saves per game in the last three outings for the Huskies.
SECOND HALF SUCCESS:  Since the holiday break, the Huskies own a 12-8-0 record, and David Morley has scored 14 of his 16 goals (and 20 and his 27 points) during that time.  Charlie Lindgren's goals against rate in the second half of the season is 2.01, which includes a .930 save rate down the stretch.
GET THE PUCK TO MORLEY:Â Â SCSU is 11-0-0 when David Morley scores a goal this season.
SECOND SHORTY: The shorthanded goal scored by Omaha on March 13 was just the second SHG allowed by the Huskies this season.  SCSU set a team record in 2006-07 when the Huskies allowed no SHGs that season.
Call him Mr. March: Joey Benik has been a spark plug for the Huskies in the playoffs.  In 12 postseason games played during his career (conference and NCAA games combined), Benik has notched 7 goals and 6 assists for a total of 13 points.  He has scored two goals and four assists in conference playoff action during his career and has coined 5 goals and two assists in the NCAA tournament.  In 2013, Benik was selected the MVP of the NCAA Midwest Regional during his freshman season.
