#5/7 St. Cloud State drops 4-1 decision at MSU-Mankato

The #5/7 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (0-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) opened its 2016-17 season with a 4-1 setback at #14 MSU-Mankato (3-0-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) on Friday, Oct. 14 in Mankato, Minn.
The Mavericks clicked early in the contest with a goal by Michael Hunterbrinker at 3:28 of the first period and then charted the game winner at 1:46 of the second period with a power play marker by C.J. Frankin. Mankato extended its scoring run to three goals at 9:04 of the second period with a goal by Brad McClure, which made the tally 3-0.
The Huskies broke the shutout in the closing second of the second period with an even strength marker by Jake Wahlin at 19:42. The solo assist on the play was charted by Judd Peterson. This was Wahlin's first collegiate goal and it was Peterson's first assist of the new season.
To close out the game, Max Coatta made the final score 4-1 at 13:57 of the third period.
Despite being down in shots for much of the first and second periods, the Huskies rallied and outshot the Mavericks 12-6 in the final period. Overall, SCSU and Mankato each had 24 shots apiece in the contest. In the nets, Cole Huggins gained the win for MSU-Mankato with 23 saves. In his first collegiate start, SCSU's Jeff Smith made 20 saves in the losing decision.
On the power play, SCSU was 0-2 and MSU-Mankato was 1-1 in the game.
The two teams will complete the weekend non-conference series with a 7:07 p.m. game at the Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato. Fans can listen to the game on REV 96.7 FM or they can watch it on Charter Cable Channel 191/826 in the St. Cloud area.

- Ryan Papa led the Huskies with four shots on goal in the game.
- Jake Wahlin scored his first collegiate goal in the contest. He played for Tri-City of the USHL last year and attended White Bear Lake H.S.
- Judd Peterson now has 31 career points and 11 career assists in 76 games played at SCSU.
- This was the first win for the Mavericks against SCSU since a 4-2 decision on Nov. 11, 2011. The Huskies had won seven consecutive games against MSU-Mankato. This was also the first time that SCSU has lost a game in Mankato since Nov. 11, 2011.
- Jack Poehling, Ryan Poehling, Jake Wahlin, Jeff Smith and Dennis Cholowski all played in their first collegiate games tonight.
- This was one of 10 non-conference games that the Huskies will play in 2016-17.
