St. Cloud State Men's Hockey drops 6-4 game at MSU-Mankato

The #5/7 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (0-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) ended its first weekend of the 2016-17 season with a 6-4 loss at #14 MSU-Mankato (4-0-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) on Saturday, Oct. 15 in Mankato, Minn.
In the first period, MSU-Mankato scored a quick 1-0 lead with a goal 20 seconds into the game by Clint Lewis. The Mavericks pushed its lead to 2-0 with Lewis' second goal of the evening at 4:41.
The Huskies charged back into the fray at 5:39 of the first period with a marker by Ryan Papa, which included assists from Jack Poehling and Blake Winiecki. This was Papa's first goal of the season and it also marked Poehling's first point as a collegiate player.
The Huskies tied the contest at 2-2 with a goal by Judd Peterson at 6:22 of the first with a solo assist going to Jimmy Schuldt. This Peterson's first goal of the new season for the Huskies.
SCSU gained a 3-2 edge in the contest with a goal by Blake Winiecki at 10:56 of the first period. Will Borgen and Papa each provided assists on the play, which was Winiecki's first goal of 2016-17.
The see-saw battle continued into the second period with a goal at 2:26 by Jordan Nelson, which made it 3-3. Once again, the Huskies regained the lead with a marker by Daniel Tedesco at 5:19 of the second with assists from Ben Storm and Jacob Benson.
To complete the second period, MSU-Mankato resumed control of the scoreboard with three unanswered goals to take a 6-4 lead heading into the final period. Parker Tuomie scored goals at 7:43 and 15:21, while Chandler Madry added his goal at 11:04.
In the contest, MSU-Mankato outshot the Huskies 33-27 and both team were scoreless on the power play at 0-2 apiece. In the nets, SCSU's Zach Driscoll made his first collegiate start and posted 17 saves in 31:04 minutes of play. Jeff Smith came in to relive Driscoll and played 27:12 minutes of the game with 10 saves and one goal allowed. Cole Huggins earned the win for the Mavs with 23 saves and four goals allowed.
The setbacks marked the first time since a pair of OT losses on Feb. 17-18, 2006 that the Huskies have been swept by the Mavs in Mankato.
The Huskies will return to action on Friday, Oct. 21 with an 8 p.m. game against the University of Minnesota at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis. The weekend series will conclude on Saturday, Oct. 22 with a home match against the Gophers at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud at 7:07 p.m.
