#14 St. Cloud State men's hockey faces #7 Minnesota on Oct. 21-22

The #14 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (0-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) will continue its 2016-17 season on Friday, Oct. 21 with an 8 p.m. game against the #7 University of Minnesota (2-0-0, 0-0-0 B10) at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. The Huskies will wrap the weekend non-conference series against the Gophers with Saturday, Oct. 22 game at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. TOP TEAM: The Huskies earned a #14 ranking in this week's USA Today/USA Hockey Division I poll and they were ranked #14 in this week's USCHO.com poll released on Oct. 17.
2016 NCHC FROZEN FACEOFF CHAMPS: The Huskies won the 2016 NCHC Frozen Faceoff tournament, which marked the first time since 2001 that the Huskies have won their postseason conference tournament and the first Frozen Faceoff tournament title for SCSU. In the semifinals, SCSU posted a 4-2 win over Denver and then won the cup with a 3-1 win over UMD in the title game at the Target Center on March 19. SCSU has advanced to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff in 2015 and 2016.
SLOW START: SCSU opened its 2016-17 regular season with a pair of defeats at MSU-Mankato on Oct. 14-15. The Huskies lost the series by scores of 4-1 and 6-4 at the Verizon Wireless Center in downtown Mankato. The setbacks marked the first time since a pair of OT losses on Feb. 17-18, 2006 that the Huskies have been swept by the Mavs in Mankato. Goals in Mankato were scored by Jake Wahlin, Judd Peterson, Ryan Papa, Daniel Tedesco and Blake Winiecki. The sweep by the Mavs snapped a seven game winning streak by the Huskies against MSU-Mankato heading into the weekend.
FIRST ONE: Freshman forward Jake Wahlin scored his first collegiate goal and helped the Huskies prevent being shutout in the 4-1 loss at MSU-Mankato on Oct. 14. Wahlin played junior hockey last year with Tri-Cities of the USHL.
BEEN THERE, DONE THAT: The upperclassmen took over the scoresheet on Oct. 15 as juniors Blake Winiecki, Ryan Papa, Judd Peterson and senior Daniel Tedesco all scored for the Huskies in the 6-4 loss vs. MSU-Mankato....Winiecki, Papa and Peterson are the team's early scoring leaders this season with one goal and one assist apiece.
WINNING WAYS: The Huskies have charted five consecutive seasons above the .500 mark since 2011-12, and they have only been below the .500 mark once since 2005-06. The Huskies have 20-plus games seven times since 2005-06 and they tied a team record with 31 victories in 2015-16 under the direction of head coach Bob Motzko.
ABOUT THOSE GOPHERS: Last year, the Huskies posted a 3-2 and 7-4 series sweep at Mariucci Arena against Minnesota on Nov. 27 and 29. SCSU is 2-3 vs. Minnesota in the last five outings and 4-6 in the last 10 match-ups against the Gophers. The Huskies own a two-game winning streak against the Gophers in games played at the HBNHC. The last loss for SCSU against UM at the HBNHC was a 4-2 loss on Feb. 8, 2013... SCSU head coach Bob Motzko is 12-15-3 in games played against Minnesota. He served as an assistant coach at Minnesota under Don Lucia from 2001 to 2005 before joining the staff at SCSU as the head coach at the start of the 2005-06 season.
POEHLING POINT: Freshman forward Jack Poehling earned his first collegiate point with an assist on Ryan Papa's goal on Oct. 15 at MSU-Mankato. He is one of three Poehling brothers on the SCSU roster this winter. The other two Poehling's include freshmen Ryan Poehling and Nick Poehling... First year players making their SCSU playing debuts at Mankato include Jake Wahlin, Jack Poehling, Jeff Smith, Zach Driscoll, Jack Achan, Dennis Cholowski and Ryan Poehling.
SWEET BACK AT HOME WITH ALABAMA: The Huskies will be back home at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center next weekened. On Oct. 28, the Huskies will host Alabama Huntsville at 7:37 p.m. and then complete the weekend home series at 7:07 p.m. on Oct. 29.
